This test uses a chloroform solution of suspected cholesterol treated with acetic anhydride and sulfuric acid. Acetic anhydride acetylates the -OH ofcholesterol, and H2SO4 catalyzes a Friedel-Crafts addition of CHCl3 to the aromatic ring, producing a colored complex (blu, greenish-blue).
