My hubby has one and he has bouts of V tach and V fib which is an out of control heart. It has gone off so many times that he has had his battery changed twice. He never used to go unconscious but the last 3 times he does for a few seconds. and thats a good thing since he does not remember the shock which is a doozy! It knocks him out of chairs and onto the floor. He would have been dead 6 yrs ago if not for that, and yes it hurts a lot he says and he is mostly afraid of the pain but since he becomes unconscious he does not remember it.

I beg to differ with the other 2 answers. I have seen people in v-tach (ventricular tachycardia- 160 to 220 heartbeats) talking to us between shocks. They are not always dead or unconcious. Yes it would hurt but would be so much better than the alternative. LPN 35 years.
Edit: Sorry I completely misunderstood the question until I came back and read your edit. No I do not have a defib implant.

We do not have a defibrillator, although they're appearing in more and more public places.
Hubby has had five cardioverts in the past two months; one in a hospital in Pa., three more at a local hospital, and the last one, which seems to have lasted, at the same local hospital.
He is put under with a sedative before the shock, but with this most recent one, he was starting to come out of the sedation when he was shocked. He felt it, but he said it didn't hurt.

well it goes both ways......most of the time the patient is unconscious or near death and doesn't feel a thing.....But I have to go with ncgrl from above, we just had a patient that was in v-tach and he was given shocks to help regulate the heart rhythm and get it at a safe rate......We could not give the gentleman anything for pain or to relax him because his blood pressure was too low.........He felt every shock and it hurt him, but as ncgrl said it is better then the alternative.....
unfortunately the gentle man passed away the next morning, his heart was damaged to bad......
I guess you did not understand my answer.......I am saying it goes both ways.......the patient is near death or unconscious when you usually use a dfib.......but on the other hand you have those patients that are in V-tach........Now does it make sense to you.......? sorry if you did not understand what I was typing.........
the people in v-tach are usually awake and from the patients i have had it has hurt them......when the dfib has been used.......
Did not realize you were asking about the implanted defib.......don't have one......sorry, thought you were talking about the portable ones........

No, I don't have one.
Usually the person being defibrillated is unconscious and they don't remember being shocked.
Sometimes,as in the V tach example, they are conscious and remember being shocked. They have reported to me that they felt it, didn't like it. No complaints of pain.
It's not something to practice. Accidentally shocking a heart in normal rhythm can put it into a life threatening rhythm.

i do not have one but having been a cardiac nurse for over 20 years now i have had people who have them tell me that when it fires it feels like they have been kicked in the chest from the inside
i do remember one patient who had one and she could tell when it was going to fire, besides knowing because her rate was high..she would get this weird fuzzy type feeling inside her chest, and if she felt that she know to go lay down,or sit down because the shock was seconds away...she would scream like she was being skinned alive
