I think it makes a difference. I painted two bedroom walls a dark wine colour, one wall and the ceiling a peachy colour and the last wall is dark wood. I put up a picture that is peaceful to look at and I now have a cozy, quiet place to escape to with a good book or a peaceful moment. The walls before were white and boring and I only used that room to sleep, it wasn't very inviting to spend time in. Totally utilitarian.
My kitchen went from white to yellow and now it is a bright cheery place that to me speaks of energy and good cheer. It makes the kitchen a much warmer place and doing dishes less of a chore, ha, ha.
For me colour does affect my mood but I'm kind of artsy fartsy by nature so it might just be me.

Color DEFINITELY effects mood.
Also, a dark color will make the room MUCH darker and increase your electric bill because you will need way more lighting.
i DO agree that white walls are pretty boring and way too generic for anyone with any degree of artistic sensitivity.
If you are particularly fond of dark red, you might try just ONE wall in dark red and find a lighter wall-paper with a desigh you like that has dark red in the print, for the other walls. Or, perhaps wall-hangings (such as tapestries) that have dark red in the design. (My daughter has used scarves and ornate bedspreads as wall-hanings, in the past, with some very attractive and creative results.)
Before you PAINT the walls dark red, try to create the same effect on a temporary basis - in case you don't like it as much as you think you would. Get some sheets in that color and hang them on the wall to get the feel of what it will look like, and what to expect in the way of potential problems with lighting. One king size sheet should cover at least a large percentage of the space of each wall Try thrift shops and bargain marts first. That way, you can tell if you like it beforehand. If you were to paint it and THEN decide you didn't like it, a dark color is awfully hard to cover with a lighter one! (The sheets, beforehand, will probably cost less than a repaint job afterwards.)

There are a lot of ways to accomplish what you want, but the easiest is to run with an aquatic theme. If you start with an aqua/teal coat then paint in curvy lines of modulating thickness in cornflower, waves if you will. Then all you need do is add silhouettes, carvings or sculptures of sea creatures and the human imagination will usually make the room seem bigger; because of the association with the vastness of the ocean. If you don't feel like putting that much work into it you could also paint it sand or taupe. Just put glass ornaments on the window and shade any artificial light sources with image decorated covers. The Sun moving you window's ornamental refractions and the distraction of nighttime light variances can do much to draw the mind away for a room's size.

It might not affect you personally, but some people are affected by colors. To me, darker colors are generally more mellow. Dark red would probably make me feel calm, while yellow or something like that would make me feel bright and happy. Colors do affect mood somewhat. So does the brightness of the room.

Not only will painting your room a dark color will make a room become darker, but it will also make it appear smaller. There have been studies on how color changes mood.

Think of the color as your room being about 1/50th as important in mood as the music you are playing while you're in there.
Some people theorize that colors are very important in mood... i think it's bogus. Wont change a thing.

I don't think that a dark red would cause any problems. It's probably a very nice color. If it was a black or something very dark that might influence you? I really don't believe it but I guess it might be true.
