Physics 101. Any object that is traveling in a direction and then needs to travel in the opposite direction must stop for an instant before reversing.

It has to. Any object changing velocity from foward to backwards muct pass through 0 to make the change. This is analagous to throwing something up in the air. The initial velocity will be pointing up with a certain speed. When it reaches its peak the velocity will be a 0 vector without speed or direction..it just stops. Finally, it will start to move down with a velocity pointing down and an increasing velocity.
