480MB of RAM is laughable for any 3D apps, or PC gaming. Listen to what the other guys said...
You can always visit www.systemrequirementslab.com to scan your PC and see what games it can from from an extensive list.
It gives you a pass/fail grade, shows where your PC sits among the min/rec specs, and tells you what hardware and drivers you need to upgrade to play said game.

480 is an odd number, how did you get that? Usually Ram comes in multiples of 128, i.e. 128MB, 256MB, 512MB, 1024MB (1 gigabyte), 2048MB (2GB), etc... or some mix and match, like a 128MB card and a 256 will make 384MB...
Generally, these days, the minimum for a decent computing experience is 512. For video ames like counterstrike, day of defeat, etc, i.e. heavy graphics, 512 is the minimum for a decent experience, and 1 or 2 gig would be more like it, althogh truth be told, I used to play games like that with 384MB, and I managed, although it wasn't always so smooth. For just word processing and web browsing, you will survive with 256 and even 128, but few computers today will ship with that little RAM.
The maximum it will go depends on the motherboard. These days I believe the maximum addressable is 4 gigs (4096MB) , I believe that is what is the maximum RAM that manufacturers are shipping in the consumer sector. If you have a REAAALY old computer the minimum may be lower.

It really depends on what your motherboard can handle.
So it can be anything up to 8GB as previously mentioned, but typically these days you'll see advertised 1 or 2 gigs of RAM.
480MB of RAM or there abouts is a good amount and you'll notice the difference especially if you're running lots of programs or run demanding programs ;-)
It does depend on what you want to do with your software/computer.
Contact the manufacturer of your computer and see how much RAM it is capable of having before it explodes xD

512 would be the mininum I would run, 1 gig is better, and 2 gig would suffice for most applications. For heavy gaming, you probably want 3-4 gigs. The CPU and Motherboard will determine how much RAM you will be able to have onboard. BTW- Vista has an internal program that lets you use flash memory as additional RAM. As flash memory is very cheap right now, that may be an inexpensive way to add RAM to a system.

Never heard of a system with 480mb ram would normally be 512mb but no, these days that is not large. I would be enough to run a windows xp, word, outlook or outlook express for emails, browse the internet - that sort of thing and although many games would run on this (dependant on what graphics card you have) you would struggle with some of the newer games. What sort of other software do you run, you do not say, they may not be as memory hungry as you think.

480 is pretty bad. There isn't even a 480 stick to my knowledge which means you have some amalgamation of lesser RAM. They make larger sticks of RAM these days, at least 1gig without having to look it up but possibly even 4gig sticks. I have 4x512 in my computer.
It's also an issue of what TYPE of RAM you have. There's DDR2, SDRAM, and a ton of others.
Can you run games with 480? Most new games probably not. Can you run programs? I'd assume that you can probably run most programs although your multi-tasking ability will be limited. Unless you're talking about industrial video, and photo editing type stuff, to that I would say no.

Rofl. 480MB ?
Firstly, how do you get 480 from 128,256,and 512 ?
You must have an old PC.
I use programes like CAD-CAM and Photoshop, "Heavy-Programes".
I have 2560MB of Ram and im upgrading soon to 4096MB.
You could have much much more !

NO 400 MB of ram is nothing. On a laptop now a days you need to be running atleast 2 GB of ram. 4 if you want to spend the money on it. Now you need to check and see what your computer will support as far as ram. For example I am running 4 GB of ram on my desktop computer. The motherboard I'm using supports up to 8 GB of ram. Buying ram past 4 GB is gonna cost you.

That 480MB ram doesn't take into account the 32MB shared for the onboard
graphics. Add 'em up and you've got 512. thats nothing kid... lik you should be running at least 1gb of ram (i'm running 4gb) go for iram it's cutting edge and super fast (look it up on youtube)

480 is outdated. Even 1gig of ram is old. These day a min of 2 gig up to 8gb is the best.
With only that much of ram, your pc will crash if you use it heavily. It's not even vista compatible, too slow.
