I Have PC desktop, a PC laptop, and and Apple Laptop Macbook Pro. I Have a Lynksys wireless router connected in-line between my DSL modem and my Home Computer. The MacPro automatically looks for Wireless signals and picks up my Router. There is no problem with being 2 separate operating systems. All you need is A router or a modem that puts off a wireless signal. You can buy one (router) for as low as $40 or up to $120+.

If you already have a modem or Router that has wireless capability....No worries, just turn on the Apple look for your "wireless network" and hit connect.

If I were you, I would do this in 2 steps.

(1) I will try to connect the new Mac notebook through ethernet cable first (your new Mac definitely has an ethernet port). This I think everybody can do. And Mac is even easier than Windows. So when you achieve this, you know you are safe and your new Mac is able to surf internet at your home environment

(2) Now you move on to the wireless part. You mention your current connection is through a modem. I assume it is broadband. So it can either be a cable modem or an ADSL modem. You have to go to some computer shops to buy a wireless router, which has to work with whatever modem you are now using at home. Just ask the sales staff, they should point you to the right device.

Then after you have got the router, follow the procedures come with the router and do the setup. Last part is to go back to your Mac and turn on the Mac Airport. Then you should be able to see the internet.

Your last 2 questions;

(a) I do not think you need to call your ISP unless your ISP use very unique method to connect their customers.

(b) Yes, you can do it yourself.

You are going to need a wireless router. I would suggest calling the ISP so that you can get one from them, as well as making sure that you have the correct software disc for MAC. But my main suggestion is that you go with an HP notebook rather than a MAC, if you ever have any problems with the notebook, HP has the best technical support and warranty, and is way easier to use.
But just make sure that the router you get has wireless capabilities. You can also still use a ethernet cable if you would like, so that you dont have to spend any extra money.

You will need a wireless router. No need to call your ISP. Although if you are absolutely clueless it might help to call them as many provide the "service" of wireless networking for say $10 a month which just pays them to support your problems. If you buy a router from the store they will not support it and will only try to get a single wired computer online.

BTW after getting the router you will be able to use multiple computers online.

you may desire to no longer ought to call your ISP. considering the fact which you have an information superhighway connection with the aid of an ethernet cable you have a broadband connection already with a modem set up. All you should do is save for a instantaneous router at any electronics save. Plug the instantaneous router potential adapter in and plug yet another ethernet cable that should come lower back with the instantaneous router into your modem. so which you have the severe velocity modem plugged into the telephone line and a instantaneous router plugged into the modem. Use the secure application with the instantaneous router to establish WPA encryption on your instantaneous router so your neighbours won't be able to use your instantaneous information superhighway. Your laptop connects to the instantaneous router which in turn connects to the modem and helps you to surf the internet on your laptop.

You will need a WIFI router. Should cost about $60. The router will connect to your modem. There will be one cable to the PC, but the laptop will connect through the router's WIFI antenna.
