Please I need to decide.... I am going over from Miami FL to TN Gatlinburg on January... I am renting a car (we are driving over) Now is snowing (I been there before but on summer, I know the roads are dangerous) should I rent a car and save around $500 or should I rent an SUV and spend around $900... it is really expensive..... PLEASE HELP ME>>>> how people that do not have SUV's or truck up there drive?

I'd go with the car, for several reasons.

1) Assuming you're coming up via the interstate, then over to Gatlinburg on 441, you won't face any problems except in a real blizzard,as those roads are all plowed almost immediately, since they are so important.

2) Inside the park, assuming you plan on goin in, they also do a good job of plowing/salting, and if the roads aren't safe they won't let you go. So they are looking out for your best interests.

3) In the car you will be more aware of your limitations and not lulled into a false sense of security that leads to accidents, should you encounter the occasional icy spot. In Tennessee you see more fourwheel drive vehicles stuck on the side of the road during snow, because their drivers believe they are invincible.

4) Save the money!!! That place sucks it out of your every orifice, so you will be glad when the kids want to buy yet another airbrushed t-shirt.

Hope this helps,

Dave

Stick with a car. There are many winding and curvy roads in the TN hills and an SUV may tip over.

You'll be fine renting a car. Just make sure the car is front wheel drive or even better, all wheel drive.

It would probably be best to get the SUV for safety reasons. If the weather looks good then get the car.

Go with the car. Most front wheel drive vehicles should have little problems as the roads are taken care of.

Rent a car that has clearance for chains. Buy the chains, and drive carefully.
