I'm sure the rules are different from state to state, but I played in Pennsylvania and there was a date when you were allowed to start contact, which is when all 2-a-days and camp would start. This date was generally only 3 weeks prior to the first actual game which is why so many practices were packed into such a short time.

Before that date, we had workouts all summer long - 5 days a week, but no pads were worn.

Other states may be different, but I imagine they would be similar.

The only practice they do in the summer is either two or three weeks, depending on the state, before the start of school.

For my school it was "optional" and it was like a summer training camp. Basically if you didn't do it though you weren't going to be playing.
