It was an early attempt at camoflage to creep upon Sunderland and have a chance of scoring a goal. The idea came form Moriarty Frogspawn, the founding Chairman who also had a private zoo, and could never find his zebras.

The black shorts were used as many of the first players were miners and it saved them having to change after a saturday morning shift "in't pit".

It was those same miners who first discovered the "Northern Rock" on the Bank of the Tyne and used the location to hide their money. Waay Canny Folk.

Philip H has the right answer.

But if you want to make fun of Newcastle, their kit colour comes because Alan Shearer spent so much time getting Newcastle out of jail!

it was copied from notts county, who also gave the idea to juventus.
i haven't got a link but i will find you one, its definetly about someone borrowing a kit and then the colours stayed.

as much as i admire the attempt to come up with ideas as to the origins of newcastles colours, notts county were one of the founders of the league, so it stands to reason they had the idea first, i will try and find another link.

its the juxtaposition of newcastle in the top flight, and represents their yin and yang. black, the absence of color, represents the absence of trophies. white, all colors, represents the players desire to keep their shorts clean by only going at it halfway.
