I've been thinking about geting a motorcycle. I don't currently own a bike.

How hard is it to get a license if you've never ridden before? The only experience I've had was like twenty five years ago on my friend's 3 wheeler ATV a couple of dozen times.

I assume I'd need a bike to take the road test to get the license. I'm not crazy about buying, insuring and registering a bike in the hopes that I will pass the road test. So how hard is it to pass with little/no prior experience.

Is there someplace to rent a bike for the test? I live in New York City.

This is what happens in NJ. I am sure it is close. First you need to take a written test. The DMV will have a booklet that you can pick up. You must read this booklet cover-to-cover to pass the test. But if you do read this booklet you should be able to pass. Next you can either take a "Motorcycle Safety Class" OR take a road test to pass. I would not advise bring a friend BIG bike to the road test. The turns are tough and the bigger the bike the tougher it is. There are companies that will let you RENT a small scooter to take the test with. They deliever the scooter to the test for you. The test is very simple on this small scooter. The good part is once you get your license you have it for life. - For NJ everything I just said is on the DMV web site including safety classes. Some of the companies that hold safety classes also rent scooters. I would go to the DMV web site for NY. I am sure everything is there.

Take an MSF class. They supply the bike and teach you the fundamentals of riding. Depending on the state, you can be exempt from taking the driving and/or written test if you present your certificate that you passed the MSF class.

Here is a link to who offers MSF classes in New York:

In Indiana if you take the MSF course and pass you just have to pass the written test which if you study the manual is not too hard . The riding test is hard to pass , so take the MSF class.
