Hinduism is the oldest religion in practice. The oldest religion that we know about was practiced around 35,000 year ago. It was in a cave where they carved a rock formation to look like a snake and other animals associated with rain on the walls. The Neanderthals also seemed to believe in life after death, so their religion predates ours.

The Sumerians were polytheistic.The Sumerians (5000-4000 BC) who worshiped many gods. But the main god was Anu, which means Heaven.

Reading the other answers I'll add that Animism definitely contributed to all religions in that they all believe in spirits or souls. Zoroastrianism is credited with being the first monotheistic religion while the Sumerians were polytheistic.

I believe it is Zoroastrianism, or Hinduism. Not sure which was first.
Wiccans claim they are, but it's sort of interesting how they are just now celebrating their 50th year lol. It was started by a guy named George something in the late 50's-60's

Since there is only one God, and Adam would have had to be the recorder of the creation account, the only true religion existed prior to Judaism as well as Christianity which merely incorporated the worship of the one true God and carried it forward.
Paganism would be the second religion, which began with the bite of forbidden fruit.

When a group of chimp-like creatures got angry and scared at thunder and all ran and hid. Next time they saw lightning, they knew that it was angry at them and would soon bellow at them from the sky....so they all hid before it came.
