It's more true to say that Protestants consider the Roman Catholic reverence of Mary to be a distraction from God, we'd rather focus on God.
The verse you quoted was referring to Jesus asking "the disciple he loved" to look after Mary, not for us to pray to her.
Edit
cristoiglesia, we don't hate Mary, we just believe that God is the only person we should pray to.

Because by rejecting the doctrine of Mary as Mediatrix (the reasons for which I have given on two occasions) they then take the making of idols and rightly reject that too, but perhaps "throw the baby out with the bathwater" by forgetting that she is indeed blessed and her name is indeed remembered and honored to this present generation. I am happy to send Christmas cards with classical paintings of the Madonna as they are beautiful and reflect the time God stooped down and put His Grace and Mercy to the entire human race through this woman.
When Christ said "Woman behold thy son, son behold thy mother" he was not recommending HER to US, this is false teaching, What Jesus said was specifically instruction (on a human and compassionate level) to His friend the disciple to look after His mother and for her to know that even as He suffered the agonies of death He cared for her as a person. Even as a sparrow falls the Father knows. But there is no meaning that somehow His mother becomes the mother of all believers. May God bless you with wisdom , knowledge and understanding through His Word.

Protestants are reacting to the over the-top devotion of some Catholics and Orthodox who go beyond hyperdulia in their unbalanced exuberance. We Catholics must be always watchful that we do not dishonor OurMother in the family of Christ by calling her"my only hope',"Our One Mediatrix'," Most Holy Mother of God,Save us',"our life, our sweetness and our hope" and other such things that can easily be seen as heretical competition with Christ as the Christ, redeemer,Savior and Center of the Universe and the One and Only Mediator with the Father in Whom we are all intercessors and "Mediators-in-the-One- Mediator'
Mariolatry is a sword through the heart of Mary and Mariaphobia is another.
Protestants who do not honor Mary and who do not have a personal relationship with her as our "personal mother of the Church' are really losing out in a wonderful aspect of a personal relationship with Jesus and those Catholics who go beyond hyperduleia( veneration beyond that due to other saints and members of the Body of Christ since she alone is the one who bore the Word Incarnate) do not realize what a scandal they are not only to Protestants but to other Catholics.
Blessed Advent ,everyone.

The Virgin Mary is very revered in most Protestant Christian Churches I have been. But the scripture teaches Not to Worship Angels. Angels are Messengers, such as Prophets or Apostles or Saints and the Church has been commanded not to worship them as though they are a new Patheon of Gods, that is all. But the same principle applies to modern Athletes, Entertainers and Celebrities as well.

I honestly doubt the validity of my answer, in that t is not specific to Protestants alone. However, here goes.
"Mary" = Mariah or Marian", both meaning "Bitter Sea". They are Pagan titles refering back to a previous mind-set, when people obtained their knowledge by direct observation (amongst other methods). So, when a child was born, it appeared to come from a small cave, hence the peoples of those times were buried in caves (they still are, though todays caves are holes in the ground) It was thought that by doing so, they might be re-born from their cave.
Likewise, at the same time as birth, there was an issue of water from that cave, water which (due to its strong ammonia content) was verty bitter. Its all perfectly logical, The "Christians stole the ideas of the Pagans, who were merely trying to explain things as best they cold in the circumstances. So Mary = Bitter sea, The waters of birth, Mary is the "Great Mother" of the "Christians". Simple eh?

Mary, the mother of Jesus, was human like anyone of us except she had the great blessing and privilege of being His mother and for this she no doubt will be richly blessed and rewarded in heaven. Jesus' last word to her on the cross was to refer to her as woman:
John 19:26,27 When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold your son!” The He said to the disciple, “Behold your mother!” And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home.

Protestants are against the worship of idols, and dislike the way Catholic tradition supposedly idolises Mary.

Theological ignorance due to their heretical doctrine of Sola Scriptura. They are in protest of Christ's Church and the blessed mother is one of the focuses of their hatred. Because of Catholic love for the blessed mother and the example of her devotion to her son they claim that we worship her which the gullible among them believe. It is sad that she is one of the focuses of their hatred. May the Lord have mercy on them for they are led by false teachers and ravenous wolves.
