They don't really claim that he's true though do they?
They willingly hoodwink their kids for a number of reasons.
1. To invoke/enhance the 'magic' of Christmas/Yuletide, like a fairytale.
2. To encourage and promote good behaviour and the concept of giving.
3. To role-play.
4. To follow tradition
5. To give orphans or otherwise institutionalized children a loving 'father figure' at a time of year when family is a focal issue.
etc etc, much like religion...

What people besides the little children who have not reached the age of reason and/or have been finally told the truth by their parents? Anybody else who still believes in Santa would be considered severely mentally challenged (there, I used a politically correct phrase).

Everyone has religion, even the atheists say they think there's no God as a substitute than they realize there's no God. And they have got religion within the line of reasoning and common sense that leads them to that notion. I think about my notion there's a God, founded on intent, its simply I suspect persons like your self in most cases could now not like my intent and common sense that yield my ideals, and are in most cases keen on pushing aside me as having no intent or common sense. But extra to the factor, all of us use religion, a method or a different, religion is the one factor that holds persons to ideals. If now not for religion we could difference ideals with each social gathering of doubt. Hope that is helping. Sure, religion is simply believe, there are lots of schools for us to believe, now we have feelings, intent, creativeness, competencies, and many others. I discover in my existence, probably the most clever factor is to believe are ideals founded on intent and competencies, but if I do, I realize that mostly creativeness and feelings will increase doubts with the intention to undertaking the ones ideals. What prevents me from giving into the ones doubts is religion, or the extent of believe I situation in my intent and competencies. For instance, a health care provider tells me I want an operation or I shall be very uncomfortable. He is proficient, certified and skilled, and what he tells me, the information and many others approximately my situation, all of it turns out fair. But then the day comes, and I am anxious, I am involved, I move in, they begin to hook up tubes, and make me in which a skimpy robe, and I start to assume, all kinds of matters going flawed. Perhaps I will die from the anesthetic or what if the general practitioner makes a mistake and kills me. At this factor, I both positioned my religion in my reasoned ideals, or I positioned my religion in my emotional doubts. Either approach...I am making use of religion...it's unavoidable. And in which I situation my religion will dictate my movements. I will both move by way of with it, or I will run from the operation room. The false impression I discover is that mostly this sort of religion isn't the equal factor as religion within the devout experience. Nothing is additional from the reality. I had been an atheist and a Christian and I can let you know in each instances I have had onslaughts of doubts that required religion to hold from me replacing my brain. Hope that is helping.

To get their kids to think there's this all-knowing entity that will give them coal for Christmas if they're naughty. Supposedly it makes them behave.
Why not just use the imaginary god instead? I guess because god gives the "gifts" after you die, and that's too far in the future to matter to eager children.
