I did this for my wedding. How picky are you about how your wedding looks? You can either pick a general color (blue) and maybe specify a preferred length (mid-calf/knee) and let your 'maids pick whatever dress they want. this can lead to variations in the shade of dress and very different styles, but if you don't mind, go for it.
OR, what I did was pick one designer, a specific color, and dress length and let my 'maids pick their own style from whatever dress came in that specific color. you could even go a step further and specify one type of fabric, since there can be color variations between fabrics (I didn't specify the fabric and they looked fine). this way you know the colors will match, the styles will at least be similar and your 'maids will feel comfortable in their dress. personally, I hate the look of 100% matching dresses, and I prefer the similar-yet-different look.
you can always go to a bridal shop and have your 'maids try on different-but-similar dresses and see what you think. it's your wedding. do it the way you want. I've been a bridesmaid 5 times and I would have loved it if one of those brides had let me have a say in my dress.
also, if you do decide to go this route, make sure each 'maid has a different style. it looks really bad if 2 are in the same style and the rest are different or something.

Different styles looks great! That's totally what we're doing. I chose the color and the length, and I am letting my women chose what style they'd like....We went with David's bridal, since they have so many dress options all in the same color...and I love that my friends (who are all different sizes and shapes) were able to pick a style that really made them look beautiful. They all were thrilled by the amount of control they had over the dress choice. I think it looks way more interesting than having cookie cutter bridesmaids.

I am not a big fan of having carbon copy bridesmaids. I chose a two piece dress for my girls. They all had the same A-line skirts, but each picked out her own top. It looked absolutely fabulous because they were able to pick a top that they liked and were comfortable in. The best part, out of five bridesmaids, only one had to get an alteration. She was on the short side, so she had to get her skirt brought up.

It is OK to have your bridesmaids pick out the style of dress that they would like to wear. But, keep in minds the you might not like that style. It is your wedding and a true bridesmaid "friend" wouldn't care what style or color they are wearing. They are just happy that you asked them to be in your wedding. Besides we all have a few of "those" bridesmaid dresses in our closet.
Congratulations on your wedding!!
Enjoy the anticipation!

Mismatched dresses won't be tacky as long as they are all the same color. I actually saw that done on a TV show this past week. The dresses were completely different, but made of the same material and color. I thought it looked lovely.

Lots of manufacters make dresses that coordinate with each other but aren't all the same. I've seen this done at wedding and it can look very nice- better than seeing a few girls who shouldn't be wearing the style of dress that was chosen!
I even went to a wedding that had different dresses and two shades of green- it was lovely. The most important thing is to try on as many dresses as you can with as many girls as you can- all of them, if it's convenient. You really don't know how you will like something until you see it on.

This is purely up to the bride.
In my opinion, the different styles look sloppy only if there is a very small bridal party (like maybe 3 bridesmaids). Any more than that, and just having the same color/designer gown keeps everyone looking pretty uniformed.
Also something to consider... I think it looks funny when multple girls pick the same dress and there are just one or two girls who are wearing something different.

The maids should wear the same color, in the same fabric, from the same company. Also, all the dresses should be ordered at the same time so that they come from the same dye lot. They don't have to wear the same style. It's not tacky for them to wear different dresses. Them wearing different dresses shows what a caring and thoughtful person you are.

I did a seperates collection and had my girls wear all the same skirt, but because I wanted them to have something they were comforatable in I had them pick the tops that they liked. It worked out well and looked great. They were all in the same color. If you look at the Alfred angelo you can play with the colors as well as the dresses to see what they look like together. Also Davids Bridal has a program where you can dress your whole wedding party and see what it would look like.
This is an exciting time have fun and congradulations.

i think it'll look nice. mismatched styles wont look tacky as long as you stick to the same material and color of the dresses. I think it actually looks kinda cute if you make it in different styles but in the same material. I went to a wedding once whering the flower girls were dressed differently in a green shade, the junior bridesmaids in different styles but the same color of green, same with the bridesmaids in pink and the 2nd-dary sponsors in turquoise. it looked so colorful.. :))
