I plan to buy an engagement ring in a near future. I have a slight problem though. I do not know my girlfriend's finger size. I read that, the best way to do this is pick up a ring she owes and put it on a scale. Well said, worse done. My girlfriend has only one golden ring that she always wears. She never takes it off. She sleeps with it, takes a shower, go to work with, cook and everything possible. How do I take her ring for measurement purposes without her getting suspicious? I might do it once she sleeps, but she'll notice anyway, I'll wake her up by doing so. Or she might pretend she sleeps and want not to destroy my plans. I don't want even a slightest thought from her side that I will or plan to propose. I want to be this a total surprise, like a thunder! :) Any advice please?

Well, you could always suggests she takes it off for whatever reason. Do something before going to bed, and ask her to see her bare hands, say you want to give her a hand massage and when she takes the ring off place it on your nightstand to see if she forgets about it. once she's asleep then you can weigh it or w/e. You can tie something around her finger and measure it afterwards. You can also just ask her what her ring size is and tell her you were thinking of getting her a ring for Christmas. My fiance took a promise ring he had given me before and told me he was getting it resized and asked what size it should be (it was a little big at the time) but my engagement ring was still a tad big and I got it resized.

Either way, no matter how hard you try to hide it, girls always know something's up. she might not know for sure that’s what’s happening, but she might have a slight clue. If nothing else works. get whatever size you think its closer to her fingers, the ladies at the jewelry store will help you determine, and then you can get it resized at the same place you got it for free. Good luck and congrats!!!

Does she have a sister or a cousin that have similar size hands as her? Or perhaps wonder into a gift shop (take her to the beach or some tourist trap) and have her try on some stuff like necklaces, earrings, rings. Tell her to pick something that reminds her of this place and buy it for her. By doing that, you can get a sense of what ring size she may have... that's how a friend of mine got his wife's ring size.

If nothing else works, there are some options:

1. get a size that is slightly too big;
2. when she's in deep sleep, wrap a string around her finger and take the length of the string to a jewelery store;
3. propose with a diamond. tell her that you want her to pick out the setting. by doing this, you avoid having to know the ring size.

Good luck!

Take a piece of string & tie it around her finger while she sleeps so you can measure the width around her fingers. Any jewelers worth their salt will be used to measuring rings this way, since men have been using this as a method for sizing their women's fingers for ages. It should give you a close enough estimate to what her ring size is so you can get a good sizing without it being too loose. If all else fails you can get a friend of hers to discreetly try to get her ring size.

You can also get her to try on some goofy rings the next time you are at Target, Walmart, or some similar type of store. They always have those gaudy rings that they sell for about $10 that are sized. Just make a mental note of the size (or buy her the gaudy thing as a joke) & mention it to the jeweler.

Most girls cannot keep secrets. I wouldn't trust one of her friends to find out for you because the suprise will most likely be ruined. The same goes for her mom. Don't take her ring, but try using plastic ring sizers while she is asleep. I wouldn't do this if she is a very light sleeper. If she has a class ring, try to find out what company it was ordered from, say that a relative likes her ring and wanted to order a similar one. The company probably has records of her ring size. Most rings come in a size 7. I have very small hands and wear a 4 1/4. If all else fails, just guess and have it resized later.

When my husband bought my ring he had to guess. Is her finger slim, fat?
Do you or anyone have a next directory book or a catalogue?
If so in the back is a chart with circles that give a letter for a finger size.
When she is asleep put some on her finger, you will have to cut them out first though.
If that fails you may have to guess, if you buy from a good dealer they should down size or make bigger free of charge.
Mine was from ERNST JONES and he bought an O, far to big but got it down to a K free of charge.
If your girlfriend is slim then no doubt her fingers will be if she is larger then her fingers will be bigger.

Good luck what ever you manage to do.

Just buy her the ring you're planning on and then when you give it to her, tell her that you didn't know her size and didn't want to ruin the surprise, Then take her to the store you got the ring (or any good goldsmith), have someone there size her finger correctly and then have it done! :o) I worked at a jewlery store and a lot of men did this. It assures that the ring will fit properly.

Congrats!

Had identical problem. For Xmas last year I asked my partner to fill out a form (I also did it).

On the form there was:

Chest Measurment
Waist Measurment
Ring Size
Foot Size
Leg Length
Dislikes (Mine was Shirts - I have to wear them for work so don't won't to wear them in my free time!!)
Likes (Jumpers / Football Tops)

By doing this we provided a list of various measurements that are vital for buying your partner a present that fits, now when birthdays / anniversarys / xmas rolls around I already have all her measurements to hand. I might not use them all but I have them if I need them.

P:S: I got list then brought her some Clothes, this disguised the fact I had got her ring measurement. She presumed I had used the list only to get Clothes sizes.

Sneaky Sneaky.

Good Luck and congratulations on your future marriage.

It's a good time of year to make up excuses for pressies. Tell her you / your friend wants to buy a ring for a sister / friend / colleague and that person has much the same size hands / fingers etc and ask her what size she wears, or scale it to a catalogue ring size if you have one in the house.

Otherwise you could just offer to have the ring cleaned professionally for her.

Good luck. You're very sweet to be so thoughtful and considerate!!

Does she have a close friend who she could go shopping with? If so, ask that friend to take her into a jewellery shop and try on rings for fun, she could make it look spontaneous. Sounds like you haven't got many options! Or does she know someone who has similar hands, that you could get a ring size off? If it needs adjusting, then you can do it afterwards.

Ask one of her friends with similar hand sizes as her to ask her if she can see her ring (the one that she never takes off), have her friend see if the ring fits her and if so then ask the friend what HER ring size is and then you'll have a pretty good idea of what size it is. Plus, like others have said, you can always get it resized later.
