The piece of furniture is a microwave cabinet. The cabinet is light in color. I wanted the piece darker, more of a cherry color. Thanks

use tsp wash it down then see if it will take more stain, if not use finger nail polish remover to wipe it down this will remove the seal coat,

I could have given you a much more precise answer had I been able to see a photo. But anyways... what needs to be done is that you use a sandpaper or sandpaper grinder and rub off a bit of surface so that the oak finish is gone. Once you have the unstained surface you can apply any stain you like and get results to your liking. For this the cabinet has to be real wood. I dont think it will work so well on veneer.

if there is any kind of varnish on the wood which there probally is the answer is no the stain will not stick to the varnish it will just wipe away kinda like pouring water on gasoline it will just seperate youll need to strip the cabinet down then apply the stain of your choice
