Well it can't get any less strict, that's for sure.
1. We have finite resources. We can't afford to let every person on the entire planet come here who wants to. Eventually all the great things about our country that drew people here will get used up at the current rate of illegal immigration.
2. The people who are here, who take the benefits afforded by our income taxes should PAY taxes. Give and take. It's not all we give and Mexico takes.
3. We need secure borders to keep our people safe. Not only could terrorists easily get into the US through Mexico, but more than 70 US citizens have been kidnapped in Laredo, TX by Mexicans from Nuevo Laredo. Our government needs to protect it's people.
----------------------------
I do agree in general with "Daniel F" who answered below. However, we have created the situation where our own people will not do menial, blue-collar entry level jobs. By creating the welfare state system we have where it's often more lucrative to sit on one's butt that go out and get a job, where people with college degrees can get food stamps, where the government pays people to sit at home; yes, we do have an issue finding people to do these jobs.
The answer, however, is not to simply keep an illegal work force here. I'm OK with making the immigration policies easier to deal with, but anyone living here should pay taxes and contribute to our country. The real answer to Daniel F's question is to put strict time limits on how long someone can collect welfare and food stamps.
If someone is able bodied, there is no reason they need those things beyond 6 months max. If they had 4 kids with 3 different guys, then they need to take responsibility for their choices; it's not mine or the government's job to do that. If they can't properly look after those kids, then they get taken away. If they are disabled, there's a good chance that may have happened at work or in a car; that's what insurance and worker's comp is for.
Once we eliminate the incentive for people to stay hom rather than work, they will do those jobs, just like I did when I was younger.

I'm not playing the "3 reasons" game but I will respond to your post. What is this "much stricter" clause? We aren't strict now! The problem is so huge we keep being told we need to just accept immigrants and go on down the road because there is no fix. I don't personally believe that. But there is a huge difference between LEGAL immigration and ILLEGAL immigration. Personally, yes, I would like a strict legal immigration process. And personally, no I'm not in favor of any amnesty program. If you are illegally here: get out. If you want to come back, do so under the legal/lawful statutes.

Yes.
Jihad-People who hate America and the West should not come here. This is the land of the free, not the land of tolerance for every culture except the prevailing majority.
Social Services-Illegals, amnesty and asylum are draining tax dollars of US citizens and most of the recipients hate us!
Economy-adopt an immigration policy like Canada. For a 6
month temporary visa a person must prove that they can support themselves. Enough already! This country is inudated with bums. (Illegals, legals and citizens alike.)
When my ancestors came to the US they supported themselves and learned English.
Get your head out of the sand people.

The current waiting list prior to initial interview (not even approval yet)for legal immigrant status applicatons is generally from 5 to 25 years. Does that sound easy? Anybody tried to live like an immgrant? Speak with an accent and apply for a job? Trust me, it is not easy! Fact is illegals go to the US to find jobs. And they get the jobs because employers need workers for jobs that Americans don't want to or can't do. (Not all of these jobs are filled illegally. The employers can petition the worker and prove that he/she provides a unique skill that Amerians and legal immigrants don't have). Take for example the case of nurses. The hospitals cannot fill all the nursing positions they need so the had to resort to recruiting from overseas. These foreign nurses were then allowed to reside in the US and eventually become citizens.
What most people here are describing is illegal immigration. That is a criminal issue, not immigration. Remember, the US was populated by mostly European immigrants, may of whom whom were illegal themselves.
There is also a degree of bigotry here when you talk of illegal immigration and look towards Mexico and Latinos. There are also illegal immigrants from European countries taking away "your" jobs and commiting crimes (ever heard of the russian mob run by former KGB officers?) yet ar not included because they are white or "American looking".

Absolutely. Were taking a lot more people in than we can absorb. Also this new generation of immigrants don't seem to be making an effort to assimilate, so we should defeniatley put more restriction on immigration all together so that the immigrants already here have a chance to assimilate before excepting more.
Overpopulation is also a problem. Were curently taking way too many people than we can absorb, and as you may know, that causes a lot of problems.
Personally, I think the US needs to adopt the 'point system' it's a much better immigration system and makes it eaiser to control who comes in and who doesn't, rather than just hand out hundrends of thousands if not milions of visas left and right every year.
Chain migration must also stop.

Yes, it should. The United States needs to take care of it's own citizen before taking in the citizens of other countries. It is a shame when our own children can't get free health care but illegal aliens can. Or free college tuition or any other hand out the government gives to illegal aliens.
We need to first secure the border.
Cut off all handouts and freebies.
End Anchor Baby Citizenship
Penalize business and individuals that hire illegal aliens.
And take a completely new look at our immigration policy and stop all immigration until the current problem can be fixed. Then caps should be set limiting the number of LEGAL immigrants that can come her and have strict laws and conditions they must meet before granting citizenship, i.e., speak, read and write English!
America needs to first and foremost take care of our own country and Americans!

The way it is now, if you make it much stricter, I surmise that would mean chasing the immigrants with dogs, gathering them in koncentration kamps, gassing and burning them to later use them for fertilizer or making soap.
Sieg heil !

1) Eliminate anchor babies. Children born to criminal immigrants should be denied citizenship.. or at the very least their status should not effect the status of the parent.
2) All property owned and money earned by criminal immigrants has been acquired via commission of a crime.. and should be seized.
3) Any employer who hires a criminal immigrant ( either knowingly or through lack of hiring controls ) should face a 1 million dollar fine and 1-5 years in prison.
The reason for all are the same.. eliminate the motivation for criminal immigrants to come here. Then we can allow open borders for trade, tourism and people to visit family & friends.

No, we want to make legal immigration easier, so that it is less tempting for business and the immigrants to use illegal immigration.
The U.S. will have a net decline in the native born workforce over the next twenty years. Our Baby Boomers are retiring, and we have fewer native-born entering the workforce than those Boomers leaving it.
1. Increased legal immigration mitigates problems from the retirement of Baby Boomers, such as decreased revenue in income tax and increased expenses for Social Security and Medicare.
"Over the next 25 years, the number of Americans aged 65 and up is expected to almost double. The work population will shrink and more and more baby boomers will be drawing Social Security and Medicare benefits, putting new demands on the government's resources."
http://malaysia.news.yahoo.com/ap/20071204/twl-nation-in-debt-1be00ca.html
2. Increased legal immigration makes the U.S. more competitive in high-tech industries. Current limits in the H1-B visa program mean that savy computer programmers at silicon Valley firms pack up and return to their homelands after a few years. When they get home, they create new companies that compete with U.S. firms, and we lose market-share. Then, we lose jobs that will never come back home to the U.S.
3. Increased legal immigration allows for job creation in the U.S. Right now, legal immigration is capped at about 800,000 people per year. Job creation is easily over 1.3 million. U.S. Department of Labor reports new job creation well over 100,000 per month. (http://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.nr0.htm) If, given a raw decline in native-born workers, who fills these jobs? Immigrants, legal and undocumented. If we want them filled by legal immigrants, we need to adjust the quota to follow our demography and the economy, not have it frozen at some politically-determined number.
