This question gets asked quite often and it usually all boils down to personal preference and experiences.
However the best 'rule of thumb' piece of advise I was ever given on this matter was - Anything up to 37" screen LCD rules
Anything over Plasma comes into it's own.

Blockheed has given the best answer so far, it boils down to personal preference and size of screen.
The re-gassing issue is a urban myth, they don't need it, nor do they suffer from 'burn'. A local supermarket has been running 12 plasma screens (Panasonic 42") 24hrs a day for the last four years, there's no drop in picture quality or any sign of screen burn.
The only thing that would should effect your choice is what it will be used for, if mainly sport and gaming, plasma is better, for general viewing, LCD is every bit as good.

LCD, you have to replace the gas in the plasma every few years. They tend to be cheaper to buy than LCD, but they won't be the cheapest option in the long run!

Plasma screens have a life of about 3-5 years. If you like throwing away thousands of dollars definitely get a plasma tv

At the moment go for LCD. Plasma is still in it's infancy and they do not last as long.

I actually bought a sony plasma tv and much to my amazment it only came with a 1yr warrentee with no options to extend. I asked the shop if sony offered any schemes and they called sony and asked. Sony said that they didnt offer extended warrentee due to the uncertainty of the life of a plasma screen. So I would go for LCD.
Hope that this helps

We have a couple of both at home, and I prefer the LCDs - the picture looks just a little bit sharper.
