For the same reason why they try to ban stem cell research. Not for the benefit of humanity but for the justification of them giving their lives to mythology. I am willing to let them suffer if they refuse a comforting death surrounded by their loved ones instead of a painful illness that takes away their dignity, so it is only fair they allow me rights over my own body.

i am a follower of Christ and call myself a Christian and would not ban euthanasia and feel everyone that is terminally ill should be allowed their own choice...Christians believe that it is the same as murder that when your time has come God will be the judge and i agree but it should be ones own choice and not regulated by the government..who knows but God that there might come the day that i would want to terminate my own life due to pain in that situation

I think all groups pay allegiance to the concept that life is sacred or to be held as precious. Any action that we take that tends to degrade that concept ought to be carefully studied. Dr. Kevorkian went to jail essentially because he devalued human life and that attitude eventually resulted in a criminal act. While we don't want people to suffer in agony, we also don't want government to trim their health care budget by trying to get elderly or infirm people to commit suicide. Nor do we want doctors earning a reputation as agents of death.
