I just bought a new portable dvd player and was told that I had to charge it only when the battery is completely used up. But then, as everyone should know, it would be easier to charge it anytime you want (even if the battery is like half), so that when I leave with the player, it has a full battery and I can use it to the max. So does it spoil the battery in anyway? Whether if I charge it without the battery fully drained or pull the plug when the battery has not been charged fully? And not only for the player, for other devices as well.

Oh, I just checked and it's a Li-ION battery, 7.4V, 5400mAh.

No it will not hurt the device but they say to make a regharable battery last longer it pays to discharge it every now and then ~~

I agree that older Nickel based batteries don't like being semi charged. Li-ON batteries are Lithium Ion, and therefore should be pretty resilient to charging when half used. However even with these it's better to fully use up the charge. However do you do that with your mobile phone or Ipod? -probably not and they generally work long enough!

What I'd recommend is that you charge it as and when you need it, but occasionally allow it to fully discharge, and then recharge it - or even run through a few charge-discharge cycles.

Anyhow, the DVD player will probably die before the battery!

It depends on the type of battery. Lithium ion batteries don't need to be fully drained. NiCad batteries are what you're thinking of. If it has lithium ion batts then you should let it charge fully then play it until its dead. Do this for the first couple times you use it. Then you'll be able to charge anytime like you want. IF it has NiCad batteries the you should only charge it when it is completely drained.

Ya know- i've always heard that to extend battery life- you need to drain the battery all the way out once in a while...but i've tried that SOOO many times, and it never makes a difference.

As long as it has NiMH batteries rather NiCd batteries, it'll be fine being charged whenever you like. NiCd are a bit old-fashioned now, so if it's new it's probably NiMH and therefore fine.
