From the religious point of view, it's permissible for a male Doctor to examine a female patient, and vise versa.
If a doctor of the same gender is available, provided that he is not less competent, the patient should go to him.
As a doctor myself, I deal with any patient as a patient .. dealing with the body of people is a very big responsibility.
There is a complete separation between the doctor's look at a person as a patient and as an opposite sex.

It is okay for Muslim doctors to heal any gender. Islam allows that.
I went to male doctors lots of times, even when I had a mammogram the only available doctor was male so I did not have an option of a female doctor (there were none that did mammograms) and it was a critical thing.
However, if there is a female doctor and a male doctor you can always choice to go to either, preferably female but in some cases the female doctor might not have the same level of experience as a male doctor so you can go to either and visa versa.
Even in Saudi Arabia where they are strictly female doctors to females there are exceptional cases, I know one case they had to call a male gynecologist for a very critical delivery, the mothers life was in danger and in that case since the female doctors could not be of any help they had to call the male doctor who performed the required surgery to save the mother and childs life.

Im not Muslim but according to the Hipocratic Oath all doctors have to treat anybody who comes to them regardless of gender, race etc. Im not sure about non-european Medical schools but here you HAVE to swear it.
"Whatever houses I may visit, I will come for the benefit of the sick, remaining free of all intentional injustice, of all mischief and in particular of sexual relations with both female and male persons, be they free or slaves."
Throughout the world The Declaration of Geneva is also sworn:
I solemnly pledge to consecrate my life to the service of humanity;
I will give to my teachers the respect and gratitude that is their due;
I will practice my profession with conscience and dignity;
The health of my patient will be my first consideration;
I will respect the secrets that are confided in me, even after the patient has died;
I will maintain by all the means in my power, the honour and the noble traditions of the medical profession;
My colleagues will be my sisters and brothers;
I will not permit considerations of age, disease or disability, creed, ethnic origin, gender, nationality, political affiliation, race, sexual orientation, social standing or any other factor to intervene between my duty and my patient;
I will maintain the utmost respect for human life;
I will not use my medical knowledge to violate human rights and civil liberties, even under threat;
I make these promises solemnly, freely and upon my honour.
If they dont abide by this they are no doctors
