Not sure if I totally understand your question...
Your first name is your given name...one that is specific to you, one that you don't share with siblings.
Your last name is your family name, the name that you share with your family ...for example your share your last name with your siblings....but not your first name

Now, if you are asking if:
Nguyen=Smith or Johnson, no, your last name is just that, Nguyen.
OR
Nguyen=Mary or Susan....I haven't a clue what the equivilent would be.
You know, I've never understood why people want to change their first name to an English name. I guess I'm too much into traditions and changing it from your ethnic name seems to take away your heratige. I've meet people that have changed their beautiful ethnic names to something dull and boring when they emigrated to the US.
What I mean is, my first name (Mary) was one of my grandmother's first name. Now, if I move to Germany or Spain the equivalent would be Maria...sorry, not gonna change it to Maria...#1Maria is not my given name and #2 it's not my grandmothers name!

stephane m,
The Nguyen you mentioned is the surname or the name of the Dynasty. It doesn't mean "Mister." It just happens that those names mentioned in the article are men's names.

FYI: This is a language forum for English or translations into English. You cannot put everything for a source in French.

Since Nguyen is a Vietnamese name, and Vietnamese is in no way related to English, there can be no equivalent. Just choose an English name based on how you think will make it easier for people to pronounce.

What does the word "Nguyen" mean? Find the answer to that, and then I can tell you an english name that means the same thing.

I read somewhere that Nguyen means "Pray".
I had lots of Vietnamese friends that had an american name. They just chose one they liked, not one that necessarily *translated* into another.

I think it depends on which part of Vietnam you are from. Northern Vietnamese sometimes follow Chinese naming practices. A friend of mine's name is Xam which literally means number 9. If in doubt - ask the person.

Mind you if it's your own name ....!!!!!!
