if you are not a practicing Catholic, why do you bother to buy presents and celebrate xmas day. Oh and the three kings bought Jesus his presents on the 6th January.! So why isn't this present giving day!

The actual date of Christmas day is an old Pagan festival. If you believe all that religious mumbo-jumbo, Jesus was actually born in June.

I don't think there is any actual evidence that (assuming you beleive Christ existed) the 25th of December was his birth date, nor that anyone thought to give him presents on the 6th of January... People have just adopted it as a focal date to celebrate him.

Indeed, I think Christmas has gained significance well beyond Christian faith (arguably due to more capitalist reasons). I am sorry that you sound so miserable, but most people do look forward to Christmas. At the very least it is a public holiday, and a good time to see friends and family.

What is wrong with people getting excited about this?

Do you actually believe Jesus was born on the 25th of December in 1 AD? That is inaccurate.

Christmas has slowly become a secular holiday. These are holidays in which can be practiced religiously or non religiously. Catholics, and other Christians obviously celebrate it as the day of the birth of the Christ.

Jesus was not born on the 25th of December. The sheep were in the field which would not have been the case in the middle of winter.
The 25th of december was the Roman Winter Solstis celebration which the church adopted to convert pagans to Christianity. So the 25th of December really has nothing to do with Jesus.

December the 25th is not the day Christ was born. Itr is the date to celebrate his birth. The Queens official birthday is in June but she was not born in June. You do not have to be a Roman catholic to celebrate the birth of Christ. It is a winderful time for families to get together. but this can end up all wrong

I think Christ was most likely born January or february and orthodox religions celebrate xmas on the 6th of January.
Christmas was 'installed' on the 25th of december to overshadow the pagan festival.
It's all political!

Dr shorty I would be interested in discovering how you calculated april 6th for christs birthday? My nearest calculation puts him late jan early feb.

This is getting really tired now. Have you not read similar posts. Have you not yet come to know that Christmas is completely based upon Pagan ritual. The Christians are practicing a pagan festival..NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND!
Also, what your saying is that only Catholics should partake in this festival? What of your other Christian brethren?
Like a lot of the other bible-belting boneheads on this section you know nothing of your own religion but yet have an opinion on everything. Shut your rant and open your mind.

historically speaking, christmas as a gift giving holiday is a somewhat recent trend. capitalism is probably the main reason everyone and their dog goes nuts on christmas.

christmas was originally the pagan winter solstice celebration.

and the three kings are just a reference to the constellation Orion (or more specifically, to orion's belt). they "follow" a star in the east (Sirius) to the point on the horizon where the winter solstice SUN (son of god) rises on the 25th of december. the sun rises under the constellation Virgo (the virgin) which has also been called the "house of bread". bethlehem in hebrew translates directly as "house of bread"

many events in the bible are simply coded language referring to astrological events throughout the year.

25 Dec is the rebirth of the SUN - not the Son.
The winter solstice is just days before xmas. The reason for the season is that the days are getting longer, and there is hope that a bright, new Spring is on it's way!

So rejoice, the end of the world is stemmed for another year!

The celebration is a midwinter festival and predated Christianity as Yule and Saturnalia. These festivals were adopted by Christianity, while keeping all the Yule trimmings. What? You thought mistletoe, yule logs, turkey, pork and evergreens were Middle-Eastern?

In modern times the festival was adopted again by US-style consumerism.

It will soon be called "ConsuMass."
