Do not be put off by all this hype about digital. Your TV will not die (perhaps only fade away !).
If you can presently receive all five terrestrial channels, then you should be able to get a decent signal to your Freeview box. Further, in the last couple of years, the sensitivity of these boxes has improved. It may be worth trying again. BUT .....
The aerial/antenna is the most important item. You should invest some time in talking to an aerial installer, someone local, and who can not only instal a new external antenna for you, but also advise on which is most suitable. Three hundred smackers seems a bit much to me, but don't just go out and buy a new one - talk to someone first.
Once you've got the new antenna up, then you can invest in a new Freeview box.
Whenever the switch-over does take place in your area, the signal strength is going to be increased anyway, but if you can get everythhing sorted before then, you'll be quids in !!
Good luck with it !

I think you may find the answer on the web, they are phasing it in over the country, for example Whitby was the first area to go fully digital. As others say it is cira 2009 when all will go Digital. You can get an analogue telly to work on through a set top box but the additional Freeview channels are mainly rubbish. This Digital change over is a total Government con. The signal is inferior and they want to get analague signal back as they can sell it for billions to mobile phone manufacturers. It is a REAL CON!

Hi Elric - it depends on the area you live and as you are in Essex same as me it is another 3 years yet!
Ps some people mention a freeview box Elric but where I am in Chelmsford it doesn't work unless you spend about £300 on a new aerial. Might be worth you having a word with a local electrical shop where you are, that is what we did.

If you can get all five channels, then you should be able to get digital through a set top box. This will work with your old tv, so long as it has a scart socket.
They are dead cheap now, £15 ish. You should think about getting one!

what's wrong with CBBS?
Do what Bluebell says and then let her know how much your chap will charge - bit of a rip off, £300.00,yeah.
About 3 or4 years ago I bought my first freeview box and had a booster fixed to the aerial and all fitted for £90.00
(But then we don't have to pay for rat poison either , here in Wales! )

It really depends on what area you are in!
In North Devon where I am it is happening in 2009 and in the west midlands2011.
If you visit the Sky.com site i think there is a link on there where you put your postcode in and it will tell you when your area is going to flatline so to speak hehe.
But the Televisions these days are a lot cheaper than they used to be, so why not treat yourselves to a new one for chrismas.

Just buy yourself a freeview box - they're not expensive now. Most supermarkets stock them at a very reasonable cost. That way your tv wont die.

The estimated date for complete switch over will be 2009.
Analog will cease (estimated) in 2010.
it isn't going to be a blanket switch over though, some areas are already fully digital.
