i mean when you think about it, what does it matter? you have your thing and we have ours. why do you have to criticize and try to sell us your crap? we don't go door to door trying to sell ours. and if you're right and we do go to hell then why do you care? we choose this. plus, all it means is more room for you and your family in heaven to play ping pong with God. we'll be partying with his favorite downstairs. is it too much to ask you religious nuts to respect our views; i thought religion was supposed to teach unconditional love, tolerance and acceptance. if anything we are closer to God than you by being a good person purely because it's the right thing to do and not a free ticket to heaven, hypocrites.

Nice question. I've been saying the same thing for years. The only response I get is John 3:16 and Pascal's Wager.

Let us examine one area Christians think about atheists. Christians seem to think non-believers hope that their good deeds will get them into heaven, should heaven really exist. The Torah (Old Testament) has a word for this: mitzvah (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitzvah ). Many atheists such as myself perform mitzvahs not for the sake of getting an admission ticket into heaven, but because performing good deeds and helping those in need is the right thing to do. In other words, these are selfless acts.

Christians sometimes proffer Pascal’s Wager (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pascal%27s_wager ) suggesting to non-believers that they should accept Jesus (John 3:16) as some sort of insurance policy against hell, just in case it turns out god really exists. The fallacy with this line of reasoning is that faith in god for some reward or to avoid punishment is not faith at all. It is a selfish act to receive something in return for a belief. The point of religious belief so that one becomes a better person, not to receive a reward or please a spiritual being.

Even the Torah addresses sacrifices or any other act in an effort to please god as displeasing god.

Many Christians also claim that only those who believe can live a moral life and those who do not believe in god have no moral compass. That implies that one lives a moral life, not because it is the right thing to do, but because god expects us to be moral. Again, the fallacy with this reasoning is that mitzvahs and morals should be followed because god or a holy book dictates rules to us and not for personal philosophical or spiritual reasons.

If the whole purpose of the Golden Rule preached by Jesus was to treat others as I would like to be treated, I can follow his philosophy without believing in god. What type of god would want me to pledge my fealty to him or her simply for the sake of believing or proving my allegiance? I would expect god is beyond pride and the need for some following.

For all those thumbs down votes, I ask you to examine your personal motivation for believing in god.

Why is the concept that one can perform selfless mitzvahs and possess moral values without belief in god so difficult for many Christians to comprehend?

I'm sorry to hear some religious person p'd you off today. No ones perfect and just because you're a Christian doesn't mean you're perfect believe me.
Christian are watched and judged by every single move they make and when a christian stuffs up we usually get a lot of flack and taunts like " you're a christian, you shouldn't make mistakes or act human, you people are all fakes etc, etc"
Well, news flash, we are just human and we fall ALL THE TIME!
BTW, door to door are the Jehovah witnesses. Anyone who doesn't believe that Jesus Christ is our lord and Savior, God Almighty, is not a follower of the one and only "true God" so i don't blame you for getting upset with them, so do I! They don't speak the truth!

Christians all over the world have a duty, a commission from God to tell people about Jesus and to preach his word so that every single person can make an informed decision about God and choose to follow him or not. God has given all people a free will to choose. Every single ear on the planet must hear the word of God and know about Jesus so that all have the opportunity of a choice, until then God's second coming is delayed.
I want to hurry back the return of the king so i will, for all my life, tell everyone about Jesus the one true God and Savior of all man kind!
If you are sick of hearing about God and you have chosen to be an atheist then maybe you should think about going to another chatroom after all, this is a Religion & Spirituality forum clearly something you don't believe in.

Only hypocrites consider that atheists are evil. Don't pay attention to stuff that meant "Christians" could say. The option to inform a truly Christan is that a truly Christan does not act larger than men and women however attempts to aid them. With out morals simply suppose, men and women might be stealing, killing, and different stuff. And the truth that even sons and daughters who understand to not take different children toys have got to imply whatever, every person used to be born with morals. such a lot men and women, if you happen to become aware of, step by step free there morals on rationale, and if you happen to consider that killing and stealing is not morals, simply consider for a at the same time. A lot of matters the bible anticipated has got here actual like, wars and rumors of wars, daughters in opposition to moms, sons in opposition to fathers, and extra stuff. Just learn Romans and Revelations. I have no idea if that used to be of any aid however you'll get this theology CD by way of Michel Pearl so they can transparent plenty of up. It used to be plenty of aid for me.

A "Christian" today told me that I was going to hell. Christians, imagine this scenario: In a long line at the pearly gates, I look ahead, far ahead, to see St. Pete and Jesus sittin together next to the "book". Wether or not my name's in it is no matter. I get out of line and walk past the crowd. Takes a long time, the line is miles long. There at the end is an 'up' escalator, going far beyond what you can see, and a hole. As I step next to the hole, ready to jump in, Jesus grabs me by the scruff of the neck and BOOMS "Where do ya think you're going, Pal"? To him I answer, as I slap his hand off me: "Don't you know when you've been outranked? A human on earth handed me this sentence."

 Sorry you had a bad day.

There is definitely an issue with an air of "intellectual superiority" among atheists, and quite frankly they tend to treat believers like absolute crap. Which seems tailor made to some religious teachings about loving your brother, and turning the other cheek...

I prefer agnostics any day. At least they admit that they can't know for sure. I find super-convicted believers and super-convicted atheists equally obnoxious. I think thinking and questioning and doubt and exploration are fundamental.... people who don't bother with those tick me off.

I don't. Their beliefs are their business not mine. My God is about unconditional love, tolerance, and acceptance. I don't know what's up with the God that some people follow and from the looks of things I don't care to know Him either.

My only issue with *SOME* atheists, is that they scream about Christians trying to convert them, and yet they turn around and belittle Christianity because they don't believe in it and fuss about how God doesn't exist. From my point of view, that's an awful lot of energy to spend on something that you don't believe in in the first place. We should all practice tolerance.

I don't care what you or any other Atheist/Agnostic believes. I just don't like being insulted for believing in G-d. I've been called several things that I know I am not (just as sure I know you have been called these same things by Christians) by Atheists. If G-d's supposed existence seems a bit out of touch for you. That's cool with me. As long as you can respect me and others that do choose to believe in G-d. Hey , peace be with you man. Like you said nobody knows for 100% sure whats going to happen until we die. I'm with you all the way to the word "hypocrites" , though I'm not a Christian so I can't attest for them, I keep the laws of G-d because I believe I am one of his people (the Jews) and I was ordered to by G-d. (yes of course through the torah, I have no evidence otherwise this was said) . I know keeping Torah cannot get me into heaven or a lunch ticket, all I know is that it pleases G-d when I do good and I do not seek nor accept any earthly gain. Christians, I really don't think they do good just to get into heaven. Christians (at least last time I checked) espoused Grace. Grace meaning no amount of good stuff you do is going to get you into heaven. So they probably do good just to do good like you, me and the other billions of people who do good stuff. I won't lie: I honestly hope all Atheists find G-d some day. And if you or another Atheist person comes to me and wants to get to know G-d. I'm not going to turn you down, but I'm not going to shove it down your throat either. But it seems it's not meant to happen. People are set in their ways and once they find what sounds right they stick with it (myself included). I'd like to stop the Atheist/Theist war that rages today. But I'm not going to be Atheist's verbal punching bag, just as sure you are not going to be a Theist's punching bag.
Shalom (peace)

Hi. I am Catholic and have never tried to push my "crap " onto you guys. That is something Catholics would never do ,even to other Christians . You may not believe this but i respect your beliefs more than some Christians who mock, ridicule, and tell lies about the Catholic Faith. These are very vicious people who do not deserve to be called "Christians"And you are right, i have often said in my answers that Atheists behave better than some Christians. So we both get persecuted for our beliefs !!!

When I get on here to answer questions, it's the Atheists putting us down, and making foolish cracks at us. I don't care what you believe in, that's your perogative. And we are not trying to get a free ticket to heaven, I know that I will go there because I believe in God and Jesus. Jesus died for our sins and I would die for him too. So we will leave you alone and not make rude cracks about your belief. But I know everytime I get on here it is the Atheists that are making the smart and rude cracks. So leave us alone. Do onto others as you would want done onto you..................God Bless you and I will pray for you.
