...or is it just more rubbish?

QUOTE Socrates used this claim of wisdom as the basis of his moral exhortation. Accordingly, he claimed that the chief goodness consists in the caring of the soul concerned with moral truth and moral understanding, that "wealth does not bring goodness, but goodness brings wealth and every other blessing, both to the individual and to the state", and that "life without examination is not worth living". It is with this in mind that the Socratic Method is employed.END QUOTE

Is life without dialog truly really not worth living?

interesting
i don´t think the majority of the people here on yahoo answers are looking for serious answers, i think they are looking for laughter more then any thing else.

the "wealth does not bring goodness, but goodness brings wealth" bit, does not always mean "money" it could mean some thing else, like a "wealth of friends" the more friends you have the more wealth, or power you have. that could be another way of looking at what he wrote there.

i just like hanging out in R & S and the Wrestling sections because its "entertaining"

another thing is, when i take time to give a serious answer, the one being sarcastic gets chosen as best answer, and when i am being sarcastic, i get chosen. it doesn´t happen all the time, but it happens most of the time. so, that is why i say, the majority is looking to laugh,
its almost as if the people are saying "life is not worth living unless you can laugh"

The Socratic Method is a line of Philosophy that involves Q+A of any given topic. This line of questioning usually involves to contradicting points of view. The object of the Q+A is to get the other person to contradict their own view, therefore validating your own.

As for the statement RE: goodness and wealth- I disagree, if you mean monetary wealth and agree if you mean wealth of a less materialistic sort.

As for the Unexamined Life- I agree. If you do not take time to ponder the "why's: and "how's" what is the point of your existence. We are here to learn to be more.... When you stop learning, its time to go....

Socrates does not infer that a life without dialog is not worth living, just a life without examination.

I find this a very useful discourse in my professional and personal life. I may not always be able to persuade the person I have engaged, but often they will bring up more ideas to ponder.... (examine life, again)

"I think I just found a reason to stay on Yahoo! Answers!"

At first glance you would think this forum was set up to utilize the Socratic method....

Yet one fundamental principle in this teaching method is fairness...to adequately probe all sides of issues, the questions need not be loaded as 90% of them seem to be here...

take a look at the questions and honestly ask yourself if the questioner was seeking anything close to diverse responses...but seeking dialog is a worthy endeavor...

The Socratic Method is absolute bunk, why would anyone want to understand a subject before making a decision about it, much better to go off half ******.

Socratic method is useful, however it has its limits as you are more inclined to remember the questions than the answers.
