Place a bowl of candy in front of a two-year-old and tell him not to touch it. Who's fault is it when you return and see that the candy is gone and he has a belly ache?
In the western world we try to control the urge. In the middle east they try to control the idiot that made the candy available.
It's a fundamental difference but it addresses your question. Where does the blame lie? I don't blame the guy for wanting an ipod if he didn't already have one. Do you blame him for wanting one?
I was born and raised in the western world. My first inclination is to smite him with a guilded hammer that has the ten commandments engraved on it. But is that really correct?
It's all a matter of upbringing. Is the thief, by chance, from the middle east?

I wouldn't necessarily say he is a bad person but I would say he is a liar and a d*ck for doing it and then taking the guys family's hospitality after that. Ok yeah he is pretty much a bad person.

he may not be a bad person, but probably he is unkowningly suffering from some mild mental problem. probably he doesn't thinks it to be a crime to steal other person's things. some people r in a habit to take away other people's things even though then neednot want it.
