A guy can sue you for anything. Can he win? No. This would be what is known a a liar's contest. and he would lose because he would be the one required to prove his case, and he has no proof. Tell him to kiss your ***.

Sue you, yes.
Win the suit, not likely.
Like you said, unless he can produce witnesses to say you promised to pay him back or he has a written document from you saying something similar, he has a very weak case.
UH OH... however.
You just confessed to it.
If your guy or any of his buddies see this question of yours, he could subpoena Yahoo! for the name associated with your user ID, and if it's you he's suing, he can use your question as an affirmation of your promise to repay him.
Repay it. Were I the judge, I would so order.

The answer is a clear "NO". No person sue another after giving away such petty thing to someone and later on demanding the cost of the item to be paid. It's not tenable under the eye of Law.

anyone can sue anyone for anything in small claims court. whether or not he wins is another story. let him sue let the judge decide and you will probably win and he'll have to pay the court costs i'd counter sue him for your lost time from work to go to court if he does sue.

how bad does that make him look? you gguys were dating, the judge is probably going to tell the chea sob that he needs to pay for the court costs and attourney fees and what not.

If it's a gift, you don't owe him.
If things are that bad between you two that he'd take you to court over a hair curler ... give it back to him, why would you want it?

If it wasn't a gift, pay him back. It is the right thing to do.

If there wasn't a signed agreement that you would pay him back then I don't think so.
