It seems like every time I check in here, there are numerous questions from so-called christians, wanting to know why it is that Atheist's think or feel or believe the way that we do.

I don't get it.
Why in the world do you christians even care?

I could understand if you were trying to convert all of us "heathen atheists" and save us from the pits of hell, but every single time I see a post from a christian regarding Atheists, they are being antagonistic, hostile, and usually just downright rude! Obviously THAT kind of behaviour isn't going to convince any of us godless atheists to change our ways!
(Who would want to hang out with a bunch of intolerant christian jerks, like the ones I always seem to run across?)

So, do tell.....why are so many of you "christians" overly obsessed with the behavior and motives of Atheists?

Cheers,

Christina http://myspace.com/mikepattonisgod

(And yes, I went to school.
I realize that Atheist is not supposed to be capitallized, and christian is supposed to be capitalized. That's what makes it funny.)

And to you christians that seem to be utterly befuddled and dumbfounded as to why I would be posting this in Religion and Sprituality when I'm an atheist?
Uh...maybe because I am asking this question of CHRISTIANS!
Where ELSE should I post it?

P.s.- sorry about the sweeping generalizations. I do realize that not ALL Christians are this way!

How lengthy has this self-flattering been a difficulty for you? I've spotted that plenty of atheists hand around in Christianity boards. But I've not often noticeable any Christians obsessive about atheism boards. Straw guy arguments are amusing.

Just as you don't want to be lumped into a stereotypical "atheist" category, please don't lump all Christians into one Bible-thumping, hypocritical, antagonistic category. Personally, I avoid this by staying away from labels all together. For instance, many would call me "Christian" because I believe in the existence of God, but I do not, for one second, believe that he is a perfect or all-loving God. Therefore, I don't even try to label my beliefs.

Anyway, I'm sad to tell you that some of the most ignorant religious fanatics are, in fact, Christians. And, most of these "Christians" absolutely cannot deal with the fact that someone believes something different than they do. Honestly, I believe that everyone believes in what they want to believe in and it's nobody else's freakin' business! It sounds like you're ranting more than actually looking for an answer, but there is a simple answer to your question: The Bible told them to do so! The Bible tells us that Christians are held responsible for converting other people, and that they will be held accountable for it, come Judgement Day. So just let them do their thing while you do yours; it's the easiest solution.

I'm so sorry this is the experience you've had. Love, people, no matter what you're talking about it has to begin with love...and no I am not a hippie.

Let me just say that anyone who is being offensive or obsessive with your beliefs is not being a Christian, they are simply being human. Jesus did not seek to shame or embarrass everyone who disagreed with him. Rather, he reached out and tried to make people feel better. If Jesus came back today, I think he'd spend more time criticizing those who call themselves Christians...this is based on how he criticized the so-called religious leaders of his day.

Being a Christian myself, I would like to let you know that I would love to listen to AND hear your beliefs, but only if you want to share. Everyone has a reason for what they believe in. I'd hope you'd also be willing to listen to where I am coming from. Good question, and I hope you find this answer helpful.

It really appears the other way around to me. I read this forum more than I participate ad yes, I have noted Christians who are hostile and rude, but more often than not it is the atheists who are antagonistic and rude. Instead of respecting peoples deeply held beliefs, they tend to make a mockery of it. Notice your own tactic with the deliberate non-capitalization of "christian" while capitalizing "Atheist". Why? Only to belittle Christians.

Your criticism is not lost on me. However your generalization is little like the pot calling the kettle....something like that...

I have few if any true christian friends...for similar reasons...yet i am christian...

to be fair however, I see a lot of self- professed atheists in this forum trashing religious convictions of others who sincerely hold to those convictions...without discussing the spirituality they possess inside themselves...

Hi there. I like to hear from different people and get their perspectives and ideas on issues that effect us globally as a species.
To me, communication is a form of intimacy and builds relationships. It's a very female-driven perspective, as opposed to the male-driven idea that communication is merely to get answers and come to a consensus.

Hope you have a great day, here's a chocolate chunk cookie.

Hi Christina,

I think it's because many Christians are not well versed enough in their faith to advance a decent reply to a thoughtful challenge by an atheist, so they resort to insecure name calling and condemnation. Ad hominem attacks are the lowest form of argumentation and I find that when Christians are confronted with a question that goes to the root of their faith they fall back on, "Well I'm saved in the Lord and you're just going to Hell".

It's intellectually weak, and tiresome to read.

Dear Christina,

<>

This is EXACTLY what they are trying to do. It is like an MML (Mutli Level Marketing) scheme. It is NOT enought to just SELL vacumme cleaners, you HAVE to recruit too. It is in the Bible.

These people (believers) are SO convinced that they are right about things that they throw all conventional social subtlties aside and will do WHATEVER it takes to convert you or to shame you into converting to their religion.

Personally, I treat them like my crazy uncle we keep in the closet in the basement. Passify him when he gets an urge to express an idea, get him back on his meds and GET HIM BACK IN THE CLOSET!!!

Most of the base of any believer I have come into contact with is one of intellectual dwarfism. They have NO ability to imagine anything but what they are told.

As a for instance, a doctor who belives in the Christian faith studies medicine and can tell you to a degree certain that virgin birth is not possible (although there have been 7 documented cases in the medical journals-ALL producing female offspring) but still PROFESSES to believe that a virgin birth was experienced 2000 years ago and a male child was the result of that event.

Now, for ME, I will either embrace my academic knowledge or my faith. But I cannot embrace both. (at least where the physical elements collide) To do so, invalidates one or the other and it is the outsider (you) who gets to make the call as to their relative credibility.

The standard answer to this rational approach to religion is that of "having faith". Well, having faith is one thing, taking LSD and having faith that you can fly is the SAME thing...until you jump out of the 8th story window to your death. THAT is reality. No MORE reality or less reality-just REALITY. And by virtue of the limits of the word, there is only ONE reality.

I believe essentially, that one who proclaims faith as the basis for their belief system is just an intellectual pygmy with a large amount of denial as to the reality of things as they are expressed to him in this world.

i think that heaps of people are too christian and that they shouldn't be against other peoples beliefs. if christians are such good people why do they dislike atheists? they can just live by their religion and leave everyone alone. they won't change me so they should stop doing this because anyway, their religion was derived from atheists. how do they feel now?
