I'm making gingerbread cookies. What kind of frosting do I use to make it smooth and hard. It's the kind you pour onto the cookie and makes it smooth.

Just use 4 cups of powdered sugar and 3 or 4 tablespoons of water in a bowel and stir it up.

Use this recipie. I use it all the time. Will be nice and hard after you use it.
PERFECTLY CHOCOLATE" CHOCOLATE FROSTING

1 stick (1/2 cup) butter or margarine
2/3 cup Cocoa
3 cups powdered sugar
1/3 cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Melt butter. Stir in cocoa. Alternately add powdered sugar and milk, beating to spreading consistency. Add small amount additional milk, if needed. Stir in vanilla. About 2 cups frosting

I think you're looking at a royal icing from what you describe.
The recipe is:

1 lb powdered sugar
2 T dried egg white powder
6 tablespoons water.

Make ahead and store in the fridge. Cover container with a moist paper towel and refrigerate.

powedered sugar and water or milk, will harden when it dries.
