Maybe it's because you all are so damn rude when you call. You call people by their first names as though you are they're damn friend rather than asking for Mr. or Ms. whomever. You don't ask if a person is busy, just assume that people want to talk to you. If a person says "this is not a good time" rather than asking when a good time to call back will be, you all just say, quickly I might add, "okay, I'll call back later" and hang the phone up with no good-bye or anything.
I have worked in a call center for an insurance company and I've also worked as a telemarketer and I know that manners go a long way. If you still "make your money" either way, then what the hell is the point of this question? Not only that numnut, a nuclear plant would not be put in a residential neighborhood, just because someone does not take your phone "survey" does not mean they don't vote, or go to their local town meetings. Hell, half the people that call your home don't even live in the same state as the person they're calling.

Because it still a solicitation and intrusive. There are other ways for people to be involved in activism without answering questions on a phone survey. And there's nothing like getting a "research survey" call at 8 am on a Saturday or during dinner. I've answered questions once or twice for this type of thing and each time they've turned out to be dumb questions, what type of music do you listen to, etc. If I really care about a particular issue I'll write a letter to the editor of the local newspaper or to my politicians or organize a group of citizens.

I think the telephone used by people who were not EXPRESSLY given the phone number is an invasion of privacy and should be outlawed.
Your type of "work" should be made illegal, and as another answerer said, your company should send letters. To actually interfere with someones private life, in their home, with an annoying phone call at inopportune times merits any type of abuse dished out to you.
You, like so many other people come up with some pretty weak excuses for doing what you do, and justifying your actions. I understand your need to make money, and don't blame you for that, but I cannot understand how an intelligent person can dish out that type of crapola excuses and expect the rest of us to buy into it.
AND you are trying to give us the impression that you are some sort of professional?? How about using Check Spelling, you'd be more believable.

You know, I don't mind answering surveys on the phone but you folks call at the weirdest hours and it's usually when I'm busy doing something or making dinner after working all day.
The only difference between you and the telemarketers is you don't sell anything.

I agree wtih everyone else - how am I supposed to know who I'm talking to anyways? I don't give out information to strangers over the phone, no matter how inocuous it may seem.
If it's really important, as someone else said, send a letter. Otherwise, you're just invading my privacy and I don't welcome the intrusion...
We used to get people calling asking things like 'Do you own a television?' which sounds fine, until they follow it up with 'How many? And stereos? Ok, and how about DVD players?' ... then you realise they're just casing your house.
Personally I don't want to play that game - it's not your 'right' to call me at home at a private residence, so don't get all self-righteous when people don't want to talk to you.

To them, there IS no difference. No one likes getting called at home from anyone for any reason. It is an invasion of privacy...and BTW, your attitude is one of the main reasons WHY no one likes getting these type of calls. Get over yourself. You ARE a telemarketer.

Proper telephone etiquette is that the caller immediately identify themselves and state the purpose of their call. No one does this anymore, and it is annoying as hell. My phone number is for those to whom I choose to extend the courtesy of allowing them to call me --- and that doesn't include reasearchers. As someone else said, send a letter.
PS: I, like many people, only use a cellular phone; I don't even own a land line phone anymore. I don't want to pay for you to call me !!!

I don't respond to either as I don't like intrusions into my home by strangers via phone. Send emails, snail mail or don't bother me.

Because all they know is there's someone they don't know calling them at hom and asking and saying random remarks. They just jump to conclusions its just someone who wants to rip them off. And I think some of them just flat out enjoy being rude and getting to chew someone out!
