A diode has only one primary function, and that is permitting current to flow in one direction only. Diodes used in power supplies and signal detectors.
Transistors can amplify signals, which means they can be used in many more types of circuits, including amplifiers and oscillators.

Diode has simple 2 junction called P and N so it is used as rectifier, in which it allow to pass only positive cycle of AC sine wave fron its P to N junction. It does not allow to pass positive cycle of AC wave and positive of DC to pass from N to P side. While transistor has 3 junction called P-N-P or N-P-N. it works like diode but centre junction is used as switch. so that by this switch we can control signal. It is used in amplifier,VFD, SMPS circuit and unlimited use.

Them main diff. that Diode allow current pass in one direction. as soon as the voltage at (Anode Side) is more that voltage at (Kathod side). (Diode has only two termianls)
Tr. allow current to pass in one direction only (as diode do) but with one more condtion that the base pin is activated (volt signal). (Tr has three termianls)
so Tr. is used most often in control operations but diode is uesd for termianl protection from reverse current and for smoothing current with High induvctive loads.
