The fact that you are so unaware about mental health issues that you would even ask such a question astounds me. While I don't expect everyone to know all of the ins and outs of mental health, I at least expect a little more courtesy from people when asking such a question. I was seriously offended by what you wrote in your ignorance.
I suffer from Bipolar Disorder Type II. I am not psychotic - nor do I try to "kill people". I am a regular member of society and am able to participate it better than most people. I can hold down a full time job and have gotten numerous raises and promotions and I also am about to graduate college with a diploma in Business Management.
It is people like you, that when searching for information (which is a good thing, I will applaud that) do it in such a way that completely stigmatizes Bipolar Disorder and mental health even more, as if we need more to deal with from clueless, insensitive people.
Freaks??? Thanks. I am absolutely disgusted by your stupidity and lack of empathy for people who have emotional problems. It seems like you're suffering from a mental health disorder that has yet to be diagnosed...which is the worst kind. I'm kind of afraid to see YOU out in society, to tell you the truth, if this is any indication of how you behave on a regular basis.

i have bipolar disorder, and i'm not that dangerous.. i spend my days working in my art studio, i have a pet, and some good friends!
bipolar disorder is a "mood disorder" and it's also related to a chemical imbalance in the brain. a person with bipolar disorder CAN become agitated, but most won't try to murder you or attack you (think about it, anyone can attack you at any time, given the right circumstances)
anyway, back to mood -- depression is a major symptom of bipolar disorder, and so is anxiety. mania is another symptom which is a huper or UP mood... some people are just very productinve or talkative when they are experiencing mania... others spend too much money or do things like drink too much, or other irresponsible behaviors. medications help with this problem (and are called "mood stabilizers").
people with mental illness are not freaks.. in fact, there are many UNDIAGNOSED mentally ill people all over the world, and probably in your neighborhood! people who drink too much or do drugs? MOST of them have a mental illness issue. people who yell, scream and treat others with disregard? well, they have a mental illness issue too! people who lay around all the time, doing nothing, when they have responsibilities and ignore them? yep, they have issues, also.
depression, anxiety, obsessive disorders, post traumatic stress, schizophrenia are just some mental illnesses. some people have more severe symptoms than others....
through it all, it's very difficult for people with mental illness sometimes... but with medication and sometimes therapy, they learn to get through.. i did!
it can be difficult for some people, but i've decided to do my best and manage my SYMPTOMS the best i can.
you can find more information about bipolar disorder by doing a Yahoo search on the illness.
take care.. and good luck... i hope things work out and i'm sure you won't be hit, beat up or murdered...

It's kind of like asking if people with brown hair are dangerous. Some are and some aren't. It is believed by many doctors to be genetic just like brown hair or blue eyes but there is not unanimous agreement. A person with bipolar disorder off their meds and in full blown manic phase can be very irrational to deal with for a person with no experience in dealing with the mentally ill. Best thing to do would either make yourself scarce by being out with friends or "busy" in your room but say hello and smile because you don't want them to think you do not like them when that is not the case. You are just scared is all and have no experience with those types of special and advanced social skills.

What kind of question is that?! Around 1% of the population has bipolar and we're certainly neither freaky or dangerous. Some folks may, at times, be irrational possibly if not taking meds or very unwell but not dangerous. What would even make you think that?

Are YOU never moody nor cranky??? I think there is seriously something wrong with you to ask this question. Are you too ignorant to search the net for information?
Your poor father has to deal with you. I'd send him a sympathy card if I had the address.

Like any mental illness, persons with the disorder fall along a broad spectrum where serverity is concerned. However, Bi Polar disorder is very common. Most bi-polars lead normal, healthy lives. The fact that this woman is being treated tells me that she cares about controlling her symptoms (which range from a hyper-active state to a massive depression) Please use this web site for more on Bi-polar disorder http://www.dbsalliance.org
and, by all means, give this woman a chance.

I certainly don't think that bipolar people are freaks. They just have a serious mental disorder. They cannot help that they have this disorder, and should not be treated differently because of it. I don't think they are dangerous, they are just human beings. If your afraid talk to them about it. But don't make them feel abnormal.

Bipolar people are not dangerous. Not sure why you would even think they are dangerous. Bipolar people are not freaks either. We have a doctor in our town who is bipolar and sure don't think he is dangerous or a freak. Many people have bipolar and do very well. What is so hard about going over for a BBQ?

about as dangerous as i am. i have the bipolar disorder, and i have my days. i take medication, but i'm not crazy. no crazier than the next person ha ha ha. one word of caution to you, when it comes to BBQs don't stand to close to the fire. i'll tell you why, the bipolar people love to BBQ kids they just met. I'm kidding sweetheart, you have nothing to worry about. you are just worried about something that you didn't really understand. all bipolar is, is a chemical imbalance in the brain. that's all. i get moody and cranky just haveing to get up early in the morning, and that has nothing to do with anything, but the fact that i like to lay in bed and sleep.

Being bi-polar doesn't mean they are murders. If they are taking meds, and stay on their meds, most people with bi-polar disorder do just fine. It's when they stop taking it for some reason, that they can become moody / combative / crazy. If your father can make it work, he's a stronger man than I, because every person I have known with bi-polar disorder has an issue or 2 with meds, and it can put a big strain on a relationship.
