I know it's a dumb question but I wanted to ask anyway. I figured this because I know there are certain sites like The Hunger Site when you just click a button and automatically some amount of food is given etc and you don't pay a thing... I'm guessing the answer's no but I wanted to ask.

Rather than "adopt" , you mean "sponsor." And the answer is no -- you can't sponsor a child unless you pay whatever sponsorship organization a monthly fee (this money does NOT necessarily go directlyto programs that serve that particular child, however).

If you are looking to establish a pen pal relationship with a child in a developing country, there are some programs out there. A search on Google should reveal many of them.

If you are looking to focus your charitable activities on one child or one family, you could try KIVA. Also try your local communities of faith (church, temple or mosque) that do outreach work in the developing world. And also keep a lookout for events in your community by people who have visited the developing world, such as a slide show by a former PeaceCorps volunteer -- they often maintain personal contacts and support for families back in the country where they lived.
