"After a While"

"After a while you learn the subtle difference
between holding a hand and chaining a soul.
And you learn that love doesn't mean leaning
and company isn't security.
You learn that Kisses aren't contracts
and presents aren't promises.

After awhile you begin to accept your defeats
with your head up high
with the grace of a woman, not the grief of a child.
And you learn to build all your roads on today
because tomorrow's ground is too uncertain
And things have a way of falling down in mid-flight.

After a while you learn that even sunshine burns
if you ask to much of it.

So, you plant your own garden
and decorate your own soul,
instead of waiting for someone to bring you flowers.

And you learn that your really are strong,
That you really can endure,
That you really do have worth.
And you learn
And you Learn
With every good-bye you learn

That is one of my favorite poems, it helped me get through a divorce several years ago, and it was my watchword for many years. Whenever I felt let down by someone, or just by life, I would get it out and read it. In fact, a copy of it was on my bathroom mirror for a long time, where I would see it every morning. Thank you for printing it. I am glad to see it again.

Wowee, I just got home from work, and yours was the first question I clicked on.It is deep for someone only 19 to have written it. I, too, am going to make a copy, because I feel it is an expression of my self. Thank you for sharing!

That is a wonderful poem. Most especially it gets the message "out there" that each of us are responsible for OUR OWN happiness....we can choose to share ourselves with others, but we can not, nor should not, sublimate ourselves to them.

It is about being a strong, well rooted individual in our own right.

I like it.

I collect poems and quotes. Hope you don't mind if I copy it.

I have shared this quote a lot but I feel it kind of fits with this lovely poem.

It is wonderful and true, we become strong and can look back on our lives knowing that we can overcome obstacles and continue on the road of life. Only we can give ourselves worth, not depend on anyone else to validate our existance.
