Recently, I have practice myself to sleep less hours per day. But I is really tough for me to sustain it. I feel very tire during the next day I wake up. Some more I am a designer. All my jobs need very high alertness and thinking. I can't think and work well in the morning. I start to procrastinate the whole day. It is very ineffective for me. I hope to get more hours per day by sleeping less but it happen another ways round.

What do you think about it?

Certainly us humans are supposed to be getting between 6 & 8 hours of sleep per 24 hours. Realisticaly though this often is not possible due to the demands of life and work etc.

What is very important though is to try to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day. Approximately, not exactly but as best as you can. This will ensure your personal body time clock knows when it is time to sleep and when it is time to be awake and alert.
It does take some practice but can be done.

You also have to resist the urge to sleep in on those days you could and rather on those days to take a short nap later during the day.

Also if you can try to have some form of extra light around you in the morning this will help your body know it is wake up time and get the brain etc working. It may be an idea to even invest in some form of light therapy.
The simplest way to do this though is what I have done. Have a bright light ( eg halogen type) on a timer set to turn on about 5 to 10 minutes before your alarm would wake you. This mimics the sunrise and gets your body starting the process of waking. I have found this to be invaluable and certainly easy as can be
Good luck

I'm still up feeding my daughter two or three times a night and I can tell you, I'd be a hell of a lot more productive if I didn't have to do that! I usually get 7 hours per night. That's just enough to look after my daughter. I get very little else done, and spend too much time on Yahoo Answers because I don't have the brain power for anything else. On the rare occasions I get a whole 8 hours sleep, I feel like a new woman! I get up, I wash dishes, do some reading, sewing or whatever needs to be done. It's great! Most bodies need 8 hours per night. Anything less than what your body needs, means you won't be able to function properly. Cutting sleep will reduce you to zombie status, so you won't be able to make productive use of your time. Just like skipping meals does. We need to eat, sleep and have adequate socialisation and relaxation time in order to work productively.

You need sleep. If you do';t sleep it will harm you heath including as you said low alertness, but also lowers your immune system and ages you more quickly.
I understand that your job is demanding, but you will work better if you get enough sleep, rather than having less sleep and working those extra hours badly.
You will not be able to sustain it too long. Get into a rhythm of needing about 8 hours a night and both your work and home life will benefit.

Your body needs sleep to recover and heal itself. There is new research that suggests that being sleep deprived can seriously damage your health. I mean think about it. People who are deprived of sleep start to hallucinate after 3 days. Sleep is a necessary and vital part of life. Look the latest research on sleep. It's facinating.
Take care and get some zzz s.

So far every study shows that the need for sleep is crucial to optimum health. Many of the same studies show that people that are sleep deprived often have weight issues as well. Sleep is the brains "down time" it needs to file the days "paper work" so to speak...if you don't give it enough time to finish then the work backs up. Doctors have also found that trying to make up for lost sleep doesn't work..once you lose the sleep... you can't make up for it...
