It's called a pass-through or a pass-through window. Generally, though, it's from the kitchen into the dining room. This makes it easier for the cook to pass food into the dining room.
It was popular many years ago so that the hired help (the cook and/or kitchen helpers) didn't have to interact with the family, but could serve from the kitchen. It was popular again in the 50s and onward, this time to keep the messy kitchen out of view of guests who might be over for dinner.

serving window ...
you use that window when serving meals ...example the person preparing stays in ths kitchen and the other one stands in the living room ,ready to serve a meal on the table ...its a quick way of getting a meal in time on the table ....
Iam form Africa and alot of homes are designed in the same way ....hope this helps !!
Good luck and try doing that ...see how it works out ...

Its so you can make sure your wife is cooking dinner. The reason for no window is so you can reach through with a stick and poke her. Just kidding. When I was a kid I always jumped through em like I was on a SWAT team or something though.....

As many have already wrote, A Pass through is the correct answer. I personally don't like them, I would close it up and make me a nice picture wall.
