That area is called Jamaica and you can probably find a small apt. for $1000/mo or less. You can check out apartment prices on newyork.craigslist.org . However, there's crime in that area, much of the housing stock is old and decaying, and it's not very convenient to the rest of the City. If you're thinking of working at the airport, come visit and walk around some before putting down a deposit on a place.

That area really sucks, so it's probably pretty cheap.

Before you move there, visit and take a long walk around. Consider if you'd want to be walking through there every night.

If you aren't planning on a family any time soon, get a studio in a better neighborhood.

My understanding would be that in a studio apartment the bedroom and living room are the SAME room. You sleep in the living room, in other words. There is no separate bedroom. Its not as bad as it sounds, some studio apartments are really nice.

JFK is in Queens, so it's going to be cheaper than Manhattan, but if you want to find one in a decent area, it's going to cost you around 1500 a month, and it's going to be small. Go for smaller apartment in a great area unless you want to relax in the comfort of your huge apartment after multiple muggings.
