I asked for Christmas off a couple months ago. I am Roman Catholic and I practice my faith. My boss told me I'm going to have to work Christmas. I'm very upset about this. I was thinking of quitting or giving my two-weeks notice because of this. Am I being unreasonable? What should I do? Thanks for any replies.

I've been employed there for about a year and four months. I'm one of the people with the most seniority. There's only three people above me with more seniority...and I believe there is a total of 13 of us in our department.

It depends on several things. How long have you been employed at your job? If you've been there less than 6 months you might not be of seniority status. At any job I have ever worked, the people who have been employed the longest get the days of their choice off before the newer employees. Also, what did your boss tell you when you asked for Christmas off? A few months is generally enough notice so that he/she can find another person to work the shift. Consider that there might not be enough people to work on Christmas and you are needed to help with staffing issues. For many businesses, Christmas is the busiest time of year. It is common for people to ask for the holiday off and end up working anyway. Look at the entire situation before making any decision. One more thing: always give a two-week notice if you are going to quit a job. You never know when a prospective employer could be calling your old job to ask what type of employee you were and if you left on good terms. You know the saying: don't burn your bridges before you cross them! I hope this helps, and have a Merry Christmas!!

I understand your issue with working Christmas, however you can get to Mass and that is the main thing. You don't say what type of work you are in, but apparently you knew holidays would be required when you started. As you are most senior you may be entitled to be off. I am not sure if your boss schedules holidays on a rotating basis and its your turn. You don't really give us all the information. I would not give notice and quit.

If you took a job where people work on major holidays, then you can't be real surprised when you are scheduled to work that day. You'll still be able to get to Mass - either midnight Mass if you work days, or daytime if you work the midnight shift.

If the issue is spending time with family or friends on Christmas day, then missing that is the cost of working someplace that's open 365 days a year. Sorry.

Obviously, you have a choice as far as quitting, and only you can decide if having that day off is worth giving up the job.

I know you're not working all 24 hours of Christmas, so work around it man. Go to work and go to church before or after. If you miss mass, so what? And while you're at work, be the best Christian you can for one day in your life. Not in just actions but in thoughts too. OK? Life is a compromise sometimes, and God knows that.

i guess you just need to decide whether you value your beliefs or your job more. if your willing to stand up for your beliefs, will you be able to easily find a job after christmas is over? since your boss probably won't provide a good referance, but standing up for beliefs is a really strong statement. so, i guess you just have to go with your gut and nobody can really tell you the right thing to do..

You should not quit
work is much more important than any holidays
Quitting a job should be only for a real good reasons and this one is not among them.
