What are some unique ways to package homemade cookies, given as Christmas presents? I'm wanting to steer away from the usual Christmas-themed tin this year. Low-cost, attractive ideas--prefereably with packaging that can be reused by the recipient to store other things throughout the year (so the gift will be clutter-free)? Thanks!

Giving homemade cookies for Christmas always gives a personal touch to the holiday season. Packaging them in unique ways will make them even more special and memorable.
For some easy packaging ideas that are attractive and re-usable, try these -

Table napkins, ribbon, pack in some jam with them:
Wrap several pieces of your favourite cookies in a linen table napkin – select one that has a Christmas theme on it for more holiday cheer! Top with a small jar of your favourite jam (or peanut butter) that will go with the cookies. Tie them together with a colourful ribbon to match the napkin, securing a wooden spreader in the knot of the bow.

Decorative coffee mugs, tea cups or jam jars:
Hunt for decorative coffee mugs, tea cups or jam jars from vintage stores, flea markets or even from the home section of department stores. You can easily pick designs that will match your friends’ personalities. Then, covering these mugs, cups and jars of cookies is a cinch with gift wrappers, available in many patterns and colours. Cut a circle bigger than your container and place it over the opening serving as the lid. Use a rubber band to hold it in place so you can tie with waxed twine or ribbon, then remove the rubber band.

Cookie envelope:
For quick and low-cost packaging, try packing your cookies in individual cookie envelopes. Cut a big square on a sheet of decorative paper. Fold all 4 corners around the cookie to form an envelope. Seal with a sticker. You can even personalize it using initials or Christmas-themed stickers.

Send him a sexy bit of lingere and tell him when he gets home you'll model it for him. Trust me, he'll be very eager to get home. And don't worry about the guys giving him grief about it. Unless your husband is extremely shy, he'll probably get a kick out of the teasing and winks. It's always fun to be the guy with a hot wife. LOL. Pictures are good- a few to show off and a few to hide from the guys. Send a picture of your pet, your house, maybe his car/truck. Maybe of his golfclubs with a little sign hanging from them "we miss you!". You can have a lot of fun with photography. Best thing I've gotten while deployed? My goldfish (with my mom's assistance) wrote me letters telling me about the happenings "Outside the Bowl". It was a hilarous look at the things that would otherwise have just been daily dribble. "The lady was down on the bottom today, waving her fins around a lot and it made the bottom all shiny. What was she doing? It took her a really long time and she got all mad when the man swam in when she was done. He has something big in his fins, all wrapped up. He flipped me into a tiny, dark bowl. I was scared! I tried to jump out but I hit my head on something and decided that maybe it was better to just wait. When he flipped me back, my bubble was bigger! There was a great plant too and I found the perfect way to scratch my back. That's hard with fins, you know. Wait, have to go. Food!!! Oh boy oh boy oh boy..." Everyone thought it was terribly cute that my fish wrote to me on fishy stationary, and the letters were really funny. It made it much easier to deal with being away from home to have the comic relief and the update at the same time.

What about a fruit or bread basket or serving plate that they can use later? You'll want to package the cookies either individually or in groups in saran wrap or Christmas baggies to keep them fresh.

Michaels or any of your locale craft stores have chinese take out boxes that come in all colors and sizes. I don't think they are to much. I think that would be a great package.

Pretty colored plastic wrap with a cardboard card in the bottom for support. Tie with a pretty fancy bow and add a card or tag. Tie a small plushie or dog bone or toy to the ribbon if there's a kid or animal in the house. =]

There are always baskets or terra cotta pots. I know that sounds weird but it is a cute idea (if they like to plant) and i got one a few years ago. There are many cute boxes in craft stores too.

One of those Christmas tins. You put alumni on the bottom and layer the cookies and the plastic wrap. Plastic wrap comes in many colors. That's how I give my Christmas cookies. The tines can be recyclable.

I use the fabric bags that you buy to put bottles of wine into (if it's a bigger cookie, like chocolate chip).
