As in any languages, context is critical in determining exactly what a word means in any given instance. To understand the meaning of “day” in Genesis 1, we need to look at the context. In the vast majority of the times it is used in the Old Testament, yom means a literal day, and where it does not, the context makes this clear.
Look at the context of Gen. 1 to see if there is any hint as to what the word “day” can mean. Night, evening, morning, number, day—evening, morning, number, day—evening, morning, number, day. Are you getting a strong hint? It’s almost overemphasized. Night—it’s an ordinary day. Evening—If you don’t get it, it’s an ordinary day. Morning—if you are really thick, it’s an ordinary day. Number—if you are seriously intellectually challenged, it’s an ordinary day.
If the author of Genesis wanted to instruct his readers on the fact that all things had been created in six literal days, what words might he have used to convey such a thought? What else could God say to convey the idea that the days of creation were literal days?
If we are prepared to let the words of Gen. 1 speak to us in accord with the context and normal definitions, without being influenced by outside ideas, then the word for “day” found in Genesis 1 (which is qualified by night, evening and morning, and a number) obviously means an ordinary 24 hour day.
I have to agree with Dr. Alfred Rehwinkel: “The language of the text is simple and clear. Honest exegetes cannot read anything else out of these verses than a day of 24 hours and a week of 7 days. There is not the slightest indication that this is to be regarded as poetry or as an allegory or that it is not to be taken as a historical fact. The language is that of normal human speech to be taken at face value, and the unbiased reader will understand it as it reads. There is no indication that anything but a literal sense is meant.”
Why do people want to squeeze evolution in there? So much of it is academic peer pressure; it’s not wanting to be different from the world. We are so indoctrinated in millions of years and molecules-to-man evolution, and many Christians are intimidated by the secular scientists. But secular scientists are fallible human beings with limited knowledge and limited understanding, and like every human, they hate to be criticized and are subject to bias and preconceived ideas, and they don’t want to lose their grant money.
Neo-Darwinian evolution over millions and billions of years is a belief system about the past based on the words of men who don’t know everything and who were not there. And history shows that the scientific establishment has been wrong time after time; that is why the science textbooks constantly have to be revised. It is unwise to bet your life on any scientific theory, no matter how popular it is. My advice? Stop trusting in man and start trusting in the Word of God. Just remember, the scientists in Noah’s day didn’t survive the Flood.
Swedish biologist Soren Lovtrup made an interesting statement: “I suppose that nobody will deny that it is a great misfortune if an entire branch of science becomes addicted to a false theory. But this is what has happened in biology...I believe that one day the Darwinian myth will be ranked the greatest deceit in the history of science. When this happens, many people will pose the question: How did this ever happen?”
From what I have seen, I have to agree with T. Wallace: “A major reason why evolutionist arguments can sound so persuasive is because they often combine assertive dogma with intimidating, dismissive ridicule towards anyone who dares to disagree with them. Evolutionists wrongly believe that their views are validated by persuasive presentations invoking scientific terminology and allusions to a presumed monopoly of scientific knowledge and understanding on their part. But they haven’t come close to demonstrating evolutionism to be more than an ever-changing theory with a highly questionable and unscientific basis. (The situation isn’t helped by poor science education generally. Even advanced college biology students often understand little more than the dogma of evolutionary theory, and few have the time [or the guts] to question its scientific validity.)”

actually I haven't dismissed that possibility. When God created Jesus he did some genetic modifications that were not seen by humans. Often considered what if God were tweaking genes as an extra dimensional being. He could let nature run its course some times and other times tinker with it. anyways a possibility I have considered. God did tell them to "replenish the earth." There have been mass extinctions and then booms of evolution which may or may not be natural but even then that doesn't dismiss tinkering by God. I very much think God is an extra dimensional being and seemingly farther beyond his creations as well. His ways are far beyond ours and if we presume to know them all then we are being presumptuous.
Uh to you that mentioned the 6 days I have to say to you that to God a day is as a thousand years and a thousand years as a day is recorded in the bible. Now what does that mean? It means to God time is not a constant. Hence prophecy and a knowledge of the future. The dimension of time to him is free rein. the alpha and omega the beginning and the end. Existing in all time in all space at once. So that 6 days could be a ratio

It's being comprehensively proven that evolution, by itself or as an explanation for human development, is an impossibility. However, does that mean Almighty God cannot allow certain species to develop (mutate) into more adaptive creatures? Does not even man know how to breed all sorts of strangely appearing dogs from the genetic originals of a wolf? But it's still a 'dog'. Right? Does not the Second Law of Thermodynamics state that all things are in a constate state of diminution and decay? I mean, is everything in the world becoming more abundant or becoming less abundant? Do things wear out until they stop or do they wear in until they improve (all by themselves, of course)? The facts, admitted by all intelligent scientists, plainly show that everything is running down and nothing is regenerating of its own volition (that is, spontaneously), neither is it possible to do so. The power of creation rests solely in the hands of the Almighty Creator and, ultimately, everything returns to the dust of the earth from whence it came.

The Holy Bible is a good book but it was written by man and it is full of fallacies. Evolution is regarded as the way life began on this planet but it does not mean that God did not create evolution. Isn't it possible that God planted the seed of life and let it all happen? Perhaps someday science may prove that evolution is a fallacy (but that is the beauty of science; it is always looking for answers). I am non-religious person but I believe in God and His accomplishments.

Sorry, not a creationist but you didn't explicitly say I couldn't answer...
If, as you imply, Genesis is an actual (if not strictly literal) account of the creation of the universe, it should conform with what we have found through science to be almost certainly true, should it not?
But, see, it doesn't. It gets the order in which things were made wrong. It contradicts itself. It's just plain silly.
About as plausible, in fact, as most other creation myths...

evolution is as much a law of nature as gravity...
when humanity began to explore the world they found that the world was round, the church denied it and prevented the common acceptance of it through those who had discovered it.... When gravity became a point of interest, the church was again there to desrupt the learning process of humanity.. today they fight the truth of evolution... 3 important truths fought by christians... how can we accept them when they say they know truth... the bible says let them who have eyes see, them them who have ears hear... why is it christians continue to deny truth when it's so obvious... why do they continue to seek to betray humanity with lies... how can anyone trust what they have to say ... ever... the bible says.... You will know them by their works.... are their works not those of deception? why is it people who study the bible never get the point of the warnings of it?

If you are, as you say, a Christian, do you hold the whole Scripture of the Bible to be the true, inspired Word of God? And that God does not lie? That Jesus is the creator, the Word of God?
If yes, then you must accept God's account of His creation as written in Genesis which does not leave any room for evolution theory as we know it today.
It clearly states in Genesis that He created everything in six literal days...as in, "the evening and the morning" were "the first day" or "the second day" etc..., that He created birds before reptiles (land creatures)...which is contrary to evolution, that the earth was a watery world in the beginning...not a mass of hot, molten material that cooled over millions of years before water from comets condensed on it , that He created the sun, moon and stars after the earth...which is the opposite of how modern cosmology depicts it as happening, that He created man in His image.....not as a common ancestor with apes, that sin and death first entered the world after Adam and Eve sinned....not over millions of years of death, disease and violent struggle to survive through evolution. If death is a natural part of God's plan, what need is there of a Savior? When He was done creating, He called everything "very good"---what kind of God would He be if millions of years of death, disease and struggle were His plan all along? How could that be "very good"?
Satan is tempting us today much like he did with Eve when he told her "You will not surely die" from eating the forbidden fruit. He wants us to trust man's reason and knowledge above God's or to put man's interpretations on God's Word.
If you do not believe that all of the Scriptures are true, how do you pick and choose which ones are? What is the foundation or authority you have to determine which of God's inspired words are correct or not? Man's reason and intellect will never guide him to God's truth on it's own, in many ways, He is above our understanding....it has to be accepted on faith and by reading the Scriptures of the Bible for what they say.
We do have evidence of God's creation and design in the complexity of our DNA, the enormous complexity of a single cell of which there are trillions in our bodies, the complexity of the human brain which is more complex than all of the universe combined, the Law of Biogenesis which states that all life comes from previous life...just to name a few and the evidence of a catastophic global flood....one only needs eyes to see it and a mind to understand it without preconceived notions of evolution and the vast ages of time it requires. God's creative power has no need for these ages nor does it state as such in the Bible.
1 Thessalonians 5:21
Test all things; hold fast what is good.
In John 3:12, Jesus states:
If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things?
Romans 12:2
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God
John 5:46
For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me; for he wrote of me.
47But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?

If you take the bible literally, which you should either all the time or never, the world was created in 6 days. Even with other methaphors in the bible (like 1 day = 1000yrs), the earth didnt come into being in 6000 years.

You sound like my father. He thought it was absurd anyone could deny the evidence for evolution, yet remained a devout Christian all of his life.
My mother is still alive and feels the same way.

B/c Genesis says that death did not come in to the world until Adam and Eve sinned. Therefore Adam and Eve could not have evolved through the process of death and natural selection.
