Its not girdles! 4 Decades ago people did not wear corsets and girdles LOL. It wasnt the 1800s! We're talking the 1960s! People in general did not have smaller waists. They may have been slimmer, but it wasnt biological. There are still plenty of women with small waists. One big difference however is fashion. Fashion in the 40s, 50s and 60s really highlighted a small waist and full hips. Today a more streamlined look in clothing is in style so a small waist isnt as pronounced, or at least emphasized as they once were.

It was a combination of lifestyle and girdles. People were more active and did not sit and stare and a computer all day. They also had waist cinching undergarments. That was a way of life back then. Women were expected to be trim. Even if they weren't they were supposed to fake it. Also people were more active.

Over four decades ago people did not live the same comfortable and convenient lifestyle that you and i do. Food supplies were limited and technology was not so developed. Their lifestyles were therefore also a lot more active than what our ones are

Because they wore corsets and boning clothing, so hold their postoure, help them fit into and stay in gowns and keep them looking slim.
Some even wrapped a belt around their waist, making the notch of the belt smaller, so their waist line would be smaller,
i think the smallest i ve heard of is 19ins (42.5cms).

Women are heavier today than they were 4 decades ago and also they tend to be more apple shaped instead of the hourglass shape.
