The only thing I have ever heard of/seen at weddings were the money dance. During the reception they have this dance where guests may come up and dance with the bride or groom. They bring up money and put into bag, get a shot of alcohol and get to dance a minute with the newlyweds.

Balloon shaped or round bags are used for wedding cards and monetary gifts.

Very few Brides use them or carry them anymore. Why? Because it is a form of solicitation. Brides were uncomfortable carrying them and guests found them offensive.

Wedding bags have been replaced by mail boxes, bird cages, and homemade containers with an opening or slot at the top.

Yes, you can use the round bag for make-up and a comb that day if you wish but most Brides have their Maid or Honor or their Mother carry those few items for them.

I have not seen a Bride carry "a money bag" in the last five years. And many of the Bridal shops have stopped selling them because they just sat there (did not sell).

I think the fact that I have never heard of it means that you may have a hard time getting people to figure out what it is. I know a more mainstream tradition is the "money dance" where people line up to pay to dance with the bride and groom. Each person dances with the bride or groom for about thirty seconds. It may be a good substitute. But, if you tell one guest what the money bag is, chances are the word will get around.

Good Luck

The money purse is for people to put money in. You sit on a chair with your new husband sitting next to you and people bring up checks in cards and slip it into the bag. They kiss you on the cheek and offer their congratulations.
This would be done during the time when your sitting to signify the opening of the gifts. (Some people do not open gifts until they get home.) This is your time to thank people for coming and for the gifts they brought.... ( collectively, you will send Thank You cards later after you keep a running list of all the gifts you got)
