When my girlfriend is upset and crying, if I can get her to lay down with me, and I hold her, with my hand on her stomach, she'll calm down and go right to sleep. What's up with this? What's the connection between my hand on her stomach and her calming down.

The reason I think there's a connection is because she won't calm down as much...and certainly not enough to fall asleep, unless my hand is on her stomach.

Crying is not just an emotional experience - it's a physical one too. When you cry, you tense up your muscles, especially in your trunk (stomach, chest, back) and throat. Drinking a glass of water helps because it helps to loosen up your throat and relieve the pain there. Likewise, when you put your hand on her stomach, it helps to calm down those muscles (kind of like a massage does) because she trusts you, and most people like being held.

It's basic comfort :) Good for you that you can make her feel better.

From a psychological point of view, this happens because when she was little, her parents or whoever calmed her down, would put their hand on her stomach and so she associates this action with calming.

personally, I don't think there's a connection. it's just letting her see that you care about her by laying with her and trying to calm her down. when i'm upset and crying, i want my boyfriend to just hold me so I know that he cares that i'm upset. it makes her feel wanted and loved.

when my bf is upset, i hold him and rub his head. Sometimes it makes him go to sleep. sometimes a comforting touch can say a lot more than any words ever could.

People are different
I can't stand it if someone puts his hand on my stomach. I was told it's because solar plexus has a lot of nerves coming together. Either you like it cause you feel more secure and protected or you hate it because you don't trust anyone but yourself.

Well, Idk my boyfriend does that to me and I fall rite to sleep. I dnt know its very soothing and the warmness of the hand on the tummy makes me comfortable and go to sleep. But Idk its weird tho but it helps.
