NYC is a pretty big place and is composed of Manhattan and four or five other boroughs, If you are coming from NJ find a parking spot and ferry across to Manhattan. If you are coming from upper york state along the Hudson park above Harrison and take the local train into the city. Suggest you explore all the ways and routes on the internet from your starting point to Manhattan.

As a fellow midwesterner, I can tell you without any doubt that you will likely hate driving in New York City (ppl here can be a bit too aggressive and self-centered). You can drive in and leave your car parked in the hotel's garage for your entire trip, or if they charge too much you can park at a garage in Jersey City and take the Path Train over.

my friend since you're coming form the northern or northeastern suburbs and you're coming to nyc by rail, may suggest parking your car at any metro-north park and ride lot and take the train into the city.

Park at the train station where you would be taking the train.
