All animals (and some humans too :-) try to make themselves look bigger and (thus more intimidating) when they're "scared".
I used to get the biggest kick out of watching a couple body-builders at work: when either of them walked into a room and saw the other, the moment they caught the other looking a them, they'd tense up every muscle in their bodies! Like two big old puffer-fish LOL!

They want to puff up and look as big and intimidating as possible. My cat looks like a funny little squirrel when he does this!!
