Have one drink or less an hour-and an hour before you leave have a coffe- soda or water. Eat as much as you want! Have a designated driver.

Don't even think about plastered as a guide. Make sure you stay sober. Two or three drinks is the most you should have. Enjoy the food but remember your wife will be judged on your behaviour. These things are not really meant to be fun.

the only way to not look like a jackass in this situation is this: order all the drinks you want, but drink them slowly. eat bread sticks or something like that to absorb the alcohol. you'll be fine.
but if you suddenly find yourself in the broom closet with one of the wife's bosses wife's, doing the humpty dance like it was still in style, or drinking one of your gin and tonics off the back of a big booty *****'s ***, then you should cut your losses and go pass out.

If you are worried about imbibing too much because the temptation is too strong, the safest route is not to drink alcohol at all. Just stick to juice or soft drinks. You'll stay at your sharpest so you'll be sure to say all the right things that will help your wife look her best in front of her bosses.

Moderation is the key. Have dinner and a few drinks and that is it. Two or three drinks should do it and a second trip to the buffet is alright if that is allowed.

Just pace your drinking.Get caught up with the conversation, and as long as you stay sober no one will notice anything.
