You can use all butter if you don't have any shortening or lard. You need something that's not liquid at room temp, so don't try and use oil.

It seems to me that we had this question just recently. I don't understand how a recipe can say butter AND shortening, because butter IS a shortening being a fat. Just put in extra butter.

Use cold butter, just decrease liquid by up to 20% seeing how butter has 20% water in it. Applesauce is best for other fat substitutions, and not for the flake you want in a tea biscuit.

You can add all butter or apple sauce or mashed banana.

You can make your own shortnening by putting an egg yolk in a blender then turn on and start adding oil. Then before you know it you have shortnening but just adding all butter is easier.

Apple sauce. Not kidding. It works great, reduces calories and fat. Use it amount for amount. But you will have to lower your cook temp a little and increase cook time.
