It's perfectly okay to be a little scared before surgery. I always tell my patients that being scared is a sign you are actually intelligent, because smart people know when to be scared. Smart people also know that it's important to put their fear into proportion and not let it get in control. Since you've had surgery before, you aren't going into this not knowing anything. You know you will have an IV, and that you will just drift off to sleep. It doesn't really matter what you think of before you drift off, but I'd suggest making it something pleasant is just as easy as dreaming up worst case scenarios. I imagine your hospital has phones, so keeping in touch with friends shouldn't be a problem, and they can call or visit. You can also often take a laptop if you have one, and keep in touch via email or chat. Your parents can arrange to pick up your schoolwork, or you could get the assignments beforehand. Then you can work on it in the hospital, or once you return home, as you are able to do it. If you take some with you, at least you will have something else to divert yourself with when the tv is boring. Before your surgery, just tell the nurses, doctor and anesthesiologist you are nervous and scared. You won't be the first one to feel that way, won't be close to the last one either. But they can do what they can to help you stay in control of your nerves. Mostly, remember you are intelligent. You are smart enough to know when it's worth being scared, and how much scared it's worth. And smart enough to stay in control of your fears, rather than letting them control you. You will do just fine, I'm sure. Good luck, and remember- it's really okay to be scared a little. Intelligent, remember?

You've been through this twice before so you know that things will be OK. Just relax and think about how wonderful it's going to be to miss a little school. While everyone else has to go and be there you will be able to be at home! Hey I worked in surgery for 6 years, believe me the people who work in surgery are good and good at what they do. They will take good care of you and you will be fine. Try not to think about it if you can and keep busy doing other things. Get you some good movies and magazines to watch and read for after the surgery, that way you wont get so board. Also maybe you can have a few friends over on the weekends and you all can sit and talk and do little things together. That way you can keep up with what all is going on at school. Heck maybe one or two could even come and you all have a sleep over. I would just stay busy doing things before you have surgery that way you wont have time to think about it. You could get on here and answer peoples questions and so on. I know that takes my mind off of things because I am busy reading and thinking of answers to ther questions. Good luck and don't worry to much, I am sure you will do fine and everything will work out for you. =)

It is perfectly natural to be nervous before having surgery, I don't think there is a person in the world who doesn't feel the same way. Talk to your doctor about how you feel. When I was a child they used ether(some awful stuff), but today is a far far cry from back then. These days they have much better ways of putting you to sleep. I want to give you the assurance that everything will be OK
Talk to your teachers about your surgery and I'm sure they can arrange some study plan for you to help you catch up.Get as much emotional support as you can from family and friends.
By the way I am going to have surgery too so I know how you feel.Good luck!

Ask your doctor to give you some medication to take at home the morning of surgery to help your nerves. Sorry you've had to go thru surgeries.
Ask your teacher for the assignments ahead of time so you can do them while you are recuperating.
Let your friends know you'd appreciate visitors and phone calls.
Myself, I pray before they put me out for God to give the surgeon skill and the ability to do a good job.
