I like him very much as a friend but I have apprehensions about working directly for him because I don't want our friendship to suffer. Could this work? What would I have to do or say to make this be successful? Has anyone ever done this and maintained a good friendship with the friend? Again, it has the potential to be a a very well paid position. Advice please?

If you work for him, you can no longer be his friend.

If the money is worth that, then go for it.
